Chinese banks disinfect banknotes to stop spread of coronavirus

Fan Yifei, the deputy governor of China’s central bank, said on Saturday that banks had been urged to provide new banknotes to customers whenever possible.

The central bank made an “emergency issuance” of 4bn yuan in new notes to Hubei province, the centre of the outbreak, before the recent lunar new year holiday, Fan added.

The measures are intended to “secure the public’s safety and health when using cash”, Fan said. But it is unclear how wide an impact the central bank’s disinfection work will have, with increasing numbers of Chinese people preferring mobile payments over cash in recent years.

In 2017, nearly three-quarters of Chinese respondents told an Ipsos survey they could survive a whole month without using more than 100 yuan in cash.

According to the World Health Organization, Covid-19 can be spread through contaminated objects in addition to droplets and direct contact with infected patients.

That’s a good idea.

flu “Depending on the strain and the surface, flu viruses can survive outside a host from a few seconds to more than two weeks.”

Maybe banks and retail establishments should do the same. I wonder if that could make a dent in the flu?

Daily mail story here
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Rather than starting a separate thread- there is a blog containing a ton of info on the virus that most will find useful. It was pointed out to me by a FReeper last month, and it is definitely worth reading. I’m not blog pimping here - not my zoo, not my monkey.

The guy’s website is https://thefurai.com/2020/01/23/the-truth-about-wuhan-coronavirus/.

The author of the site was initially rather skeptical of the virus, as the R0 seemed smaller than one. Over time, his thoughts have evolved.

Please take a minute or two to read that place.

The Chinese have no idea how to stop this disaster of their own doing! It’s much worse than what is being reported.

At this point I don’t think the “ancient Chinese secret” will do much good!

There are a couple long, but superb, guest blogger pieces on the corona virus outbreak and related subjects at, off all places, the great global warming denier site Watts Up With That? Covers a lot of the underlying science, but written so you don't have to be a subspecialist to understand them:

Feb 10th piece
Feb 14th piece

There's not a lot repeated between them so they are both worth reading for those interested and willing to spend the time. This MD learned a lot from them including that the recent jump in numbers reported isn't from a jump in the disease, but from the Chinese recognizing their (and probably 'our') "test" was having a lot of false negatives, and switching to a clinical definition for having the disease. Now many more cases can be recognized officially. It says that quarantine is effective and our current best option and that masks haven't helped. It says a vaccine is unlikely to become a solution; and more importantly explains why vaccines work great against some viruses and poorly against others. And it says that an antiviral drug, developed against Ebola and there proven safe but alas ineffective, shows great promise for the severe cases.

I'm sure this is ALL ABOUT issuing the Chinese people un-infected money and NOTHING about manipulating their money supply.

Do they really think we're that stupid?
