Gov. Newsom [CA] Seeks to Expand Forced Psychiatric Treatment, With Aim of Getting People Off Streets

Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to make it easier for the government to force psychiatric treatment for people with mental illness and expand statewide a still-developing test program that allows officials to more easily take control over those deemed unable to care for themselves.

In a State of the State address Wednesday devoted almost entirely to the issue of homelessness, the Democratic governor said the state should broaden those laws “within the bounds of deep respect for civil liberties and personal freedoms — but with an equal emphasis on helping people into the life-saving treatment that they need at the precise moment they need it.”

Newsom drew support from members of both political parties. But civil libertarians have concerns, while advocates for the mentally ill warned that proper services must be in place and voluntary options exhausted first.

There is a large body of precedent that protects the civil rights of psychiatric patients, against coerced treatment and involuntary confinement. Newsome won't have the horses to overturn decades of law.

“We have to help them for their own good whether they like it or not.”

Ah, that sounds eerily familiar, and NOT in a good way!

Be very careful what you wish for, and remember the law of unintended consequuences.

If you did mental reviews, and forced drug-rehab (with failures referred to fenced-in compounds)...I might agree that 90-percent of the problem would go away. From the remaining group...they might as well admit that job growth in the state isn’t going to work, and find some way to help those restart their lives in a more active job market.

But here’s the thing...Newsome will probably only fund this mental review thing with 2-percent of the funding required, so you will see 200 folks put away, and then the whole thing ends at that point.

I’ll add this as well...if they do the mental review, and decide to put these ‘failures’ on some drug solution to control their paranoid schizophrenia....leaving them in half-way houses...that will fail as well.

Is sanity returning to California?

Now what about the druggies, get them off the street as well and, presto, no more “homeless” problem!

Psychiatric beds are many times more expensive than homeless shelters.

The “homeless problem” exists for exactly the purpose you lay out. It’s the social version of Cloward - Piven Strategy. Its all about prosecuting The Revolution

The strategy is to let the vagrancy problem become so bad that the government can push forward coercive “mental illness” laws that they can use a weapon they will then apply to people they oppose.

The involuntary commitment unit will be located right next to the re education camps

No, they want to lock their political opponents up

The “homeless” issue is just a pretext to force through the necessary laws.

Most of the “homeless” in Cali are not mentally ill - they are rational people riding the welfare rolls and making a rational economic decision to save money by avoiding the outrageous cost of housing

Many homeless are illegal aliens from third world countries where shanty towns like those springing up in California are the norm.

There are some mentally ill homeless for sure, and even more who are substance abusers, but most are just people riding the system who should be dealt with via vagrancy and loitering laws.

You are correct of course. However this was litigated back in the 1960’s and adjudged that even the mentally ill and the drug abusers had the right not to be committed but to wander about.
So everything old is new again.

My how the lemmings in Cai seem to forget the Dems run this state. Veto proof majorities and the Governor. It has been this way for years. Also dont forget Newsome was the mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2012.

All that law was built up the past 50 years. It is a complete and utter failure. NOTHING has worked to stem the tide of human wreckage. The edifice of law can be chipped away at.

Other things have changed:
Drugs are far more widely available and cheap
Drug kingpins don’t get executed
Society is FAR more permissive. There is no more shame upon families and individuals.

And folks of his ilk, back in the 60s and 70s, were the ones who said that releasing people from mental institutions was the humane thing to do and that they could take care of themselves in open society.
