Krytyka Polityczna (Poland): It's time to introduce a tax on meat
Krytyka Polityczna ^ | February 20, 2020 | Sylwia Spurek

For several days the press sounded the alarm due to the fact that MEPs from the "Green" and "Progressive Alliance of socialists and Democrats" want to raise the price of meat, and thereby to allegedly deprive people of access to this product and to destroy agriculture. Giving up meat or limitation of consumption is regarded as an attack on tradition. Is it possible to get rid of meat?

The topic is important and complex, so we should explain what is behind the idea to raise taxes on beef cattle, and why we need to think to do it for a sake of choice between our habits and the future.

Now the prices of meat do not meet the burden on the environment, inflicted by its its production and do not consider critical in the context of combating climate change factor: the emission of greenhouse gases. They are in the case of cattle breeding and related industries (dairy farming and egg production) are particularly large.

The British Royal Institute for international relations says in its report that because of meat production in the atmosphere gets more CO2, than due to the functioning of automobile, air, railway and water transport. The livestock industry accounts for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while the share of beef production and dairy products in the emissions associated with breeding animals, is 65%. What is the impact on the environment provides livestock, particularly evident in its comparison with crop production. If in the production of a kilogram of beef produces about 60 pounds of greenhouse gases, then the production of a kilogram of peas only one.

Of course, changes must occur in all sectors that have a negative impact on the environment, however, the climate enemy number one, along with the traditional energy is industrial livestock production, including the fact that it operates in close conjunction with other damaging environmental industries. Feed production for livestock requires clearing forests and planting large areas to forage crops, meat need to process, pack, transport — as a result of this activity produces more CO2 than directly in the farming of animals.

Critics of the idea of higher prices for meat claim that such a move would hurt farmers. Meanwhile, the tax on meat, according to estimates, will give to the European budget of about 32.2 billion euros per year. These funds will be used to support the agricultural sector and help in its shift from livestock to crop production. Speech thus goes not about the destruction of agriculture and the transition to a more balanced development.

Also often heard the argument that the increase in meat prices will hit the most vulnerable layers of the population. The truth, however, is that these people are now the main victims of animal husbandry. First, located in the countryside farms pollute the atmosphere (in particular, by huge amount of ammonia), land and water (their owners often discharge wastewater into the surrounding water). In addition, because of the wastes (which are also sometimes utilized illegally) there are mice, rats, flies first and foremost, a disgusting smell. The standard of living of people in the area where the farm is reduced, they are threatened by various diseases.

Yes, in the village sometimes unpleasant smells, say opponents of tough regulation of livestock farms. But what is being produced by industrial facilities of this kind, it is not an unpleasant smell, and a terrible stench. This is not an idyllic village, which many imagine. If you don't believe me, go in spring Covenin, Maganin or Golczewo. In such places the value of the property, as the chances of development of agro-tourism plummeting, that is, the people lose a potential source of income.

Secondly, now poor people buy the cheapest meat products, guided by a false notion that food of animal origin is more nutritious than a vegetable. Sausages, sausages, chicken because of its prices are more likely to be in the shopping list than the vegetables.

This habit has also been promoted by the media. Commercials, extolling the sausage, the sauce to meat or pate can be seen on TV at least several times per hour. And see whether anyone where are Polish apples, carrots or Kale? What is the image of "nutritious food" sold to the Polish people? The vegetables in this kitchen appear only in the form of salad, lonely side dish next to the main character — a massive chicken leg or grilled chops. We too rarely hear about the fact that the basis of cheap and popular dishes of fast food is low quality processed meat.

Abounding such products diet affects the health of people, and this requires additional financial injections into the healthcare system. Scientific studies show that people eating primarily dairy and meat products are more likely to suffer diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The world health organization in 2015, put the meat in the first group of carcinogenic factors, which are also, for example, asbestos and cigarettes. This is nothing new, but even knowing that meat is not the most useful part of our diet, to give it prevents us from habit and tradition. Vegetable food rich in nutrients, on the contrary, good for health.

Giving up meat does not mean the need to make sacrifices. If you stick to the meat diet induces us just a taste of certain traditional dishes, then have it appear on the market, ethical, healthy products with high protein content. They are produced in small, often family-run company, and it pleases: caring about the environment should support local producers as this reduces the path of the product to the consumer. Many companies producing vegetable analogues of meats, with particular focus on their activities climate neutral.

Being involved in feasibility studies of industrial livestock production, many forget about the rights of animals, and this is a very important aspect. Engaged in mass production of meat, milk and eggs enterprise restrict to a minimum the wellbeing of the animals. Providing them with more comfortable conditions (for example, additional space or access to sun and fresh air) seems a luxury. Why spend the money if the fate of these creatures is known in advance, and the minimum requirements are met?

We are allowed to convince themselves that the farm animals exist purely for us to satisfy our nutritional needs. American writer and feminist Alice Walker (Alice Walker) once said that animals exist for themselves. They are not created for man, as women are not meant for men and black for white. Value of their lives is not in use for human.

We are not questioning the thesis, imposed on us livestock industry is not subjected to critical reflection image of the world that sell to us in the framework of its marketing strategies. We continue to exploit and kill animals, often doing this independently, and indirectly "hiring" it and paying them. We pushed out from his mind the fact that the use of animals for production of meat, milk and eggs is due to the huge suffering that should not be in the present.

The catastrophe unfolding before our eyes can be compared to fire. On the one hand, we know that the fire needs to be extinguished as quickly as possible so he doesn't spread out of control. On the other — ignore the facts associated with industrial farming, idly watching as polluted air, water and soil, forests are cut down, disappear from the face of the Earth another wildlife species, and billions of head of cattle are killed for profit and not for the satisfaction of basic human needs.

The European Union has the resources and tools to stop this catastrophe. The Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans was not afraid to take a principled stand on the issue of the crisis of the justice system in Poland and I hope he is bold enough to strongly support actions aimed at saving the climate.

Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold, I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet

When stuff like this gets posted I usually go to Locale to see if its made it to the state or country page. Because the comments most often come from someone not from the area affected. The last time someone posted there was 2007 but I still feel this will not be accepted by the average Pole and their reaction will be. %$*^$#^(&%+_)(*

Folks, this issue is now down to fundamentals and someone does not seem to understand Farming vs Ranching and the differences between the two. The type of land needed to feed grass fed animals vs the type of soil needed for crop production, and so much more.

...and the real effort is an anti-God movement, which encompasses both climate change and anti-meat sustainable agriculture idiots primarily known as leftist, or climate Nazi’s. Anti-God stems from the unwillingness of many to believe what God gave to Adam dominion over the earth and everything in it.

A very hard, nasty, permanent divorce. So that they’re never a threat to us again.

Poland should have outlawed any form of progressivism/socialism/communism.

The author or anyone who buys the numbers about meat causing “climate change” is a LIIAR and/or a MORON and deserves to be thrown into a kettle and cooked alive.

Do them before they try and gulag us.
