Laborers in Andrew Carnegie’s mills worked twelve hour days, seven days a week. At the end of each week was the “long shift”. That was when you changed between the day shift and the night shift. Your long shift was 24 hours long.

Yes, anyone could quit at any time, and try to get a job somewhere else. No doubt about that. But I have no respect for anyone who wouldn’t give their workers a day of rest.

Oh, and one more thing. Carnegie gave to the local churches. But his donations came with a string attached. There must be no mention from the pulpit about the biblical day of rest.
