Dick Law & Order: SVU is making television history this season with its record-setting 21st season, making it TVs longest-running primetime live-action series. And Dick Wolf;s venerable crime drama starring Mariska Hargitay is nowhere near done. NBC has given Law & Order: SVU a new three-year renewal for Seasons 22, 23 and 24, expanding the gap over the previous record mark of 20 seasons set by mothership series Law & Order (1990-2010) and Gunsmoke (1955-75). The massive renewal is part of a mega new deal for Wolf has signed with Law & Order: SVU studio Universal Television, that also includes a three-year renewal for the three Chicago dramas.
This season also marks a milestone for Hargitay whose Lt. Benson became the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series, surpassing Gunsmokes James Arness and Milburn Stone as well as Kelsey Grammers Frasier Crane.
Will she continue to extend her record portrayal of Benson, the character that has become the heart and soul of SVU? For the past number of years, Hargitay has been re-upping her SVU contract year by year. I hear she is yet to sign a deal for the newly ordered seasons but has she has publicly expressed her commitment to SVU, which has become more than a show and a personal cause for her.
Hargitays personal commitment to the issues tackled on SVU led her to create and oversee the Joyful Heart Foundation, dedicated to transforming societys response to sexual violence, supporting survivors and ending the violence.
The massive renewal for SVU is far from just a nod to its legacy. Now in its 21st season, the series continues to be ratings stalwart and has emerged as one of NBCUs strongest digital performers.
For the 2018-19 season Law & Order: SVU scored as televisions #1 most-watched series with more than 150 billion minutes viewed across NBC, USA and Ion. For the 2019-20 season to date, SVU is #1 in its Thursday 10-11 p.m. timeslot versus regular ABC and CBS competition in adults 18-49 and total viewers. In Live+ Nielsens, SVU is averaging a 1.5 rating in 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers overall and with the addition of digital and linear delayed viewing to date, the shows season premiere episode has climbed to a 3.9 in 18-49 and 11.1 million viewers overall.
Dick Wolf has proven time and time again that he makes shows audiences love, said Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. We are delighted, excited and proud that as part of this epic deal with Wolf Entertainment, NBCs loyal audience will know that their favorite shows have a certain future for the next three years.
Chung - chung.
These are their stories.
Bring back Captain Cragen.
They have been political on current event issues over the last few years. But, I still love all of the L&O shows.
He was one of the best people on the show.
Mariska supported the anti-kavannah witch. I stopped watching.
Yes. The original crew.: Elliott, Liberal Munch, Barba, definitely preferred Olivia as a detective.
While I watched the original Law and Order, I never got into the spin-offs.
I guess I'm not interested in shows that feature depraved criminals abusing and terrorizing innocent people, which apparently is the kind of shows that "audiences love" these days.

‘Special Victims Unit’
Because some victims are ‘special’ and some aren’t.
And don’t you forget it, peasants !
Love the show. Yep liberal bent but I dont get my principles from a tv show.
How the hell is this still on?!?!?!
I used to watch the marathons of the original L&O on TNT, back in like 2001! And those were episodes that were 10 years old!
I was completely a fan of it, but SVU was never like the original to me.
The sequel will be:
Law & Order DNR.
I gave up on that show a long time ago and can’t stand the reruns. It is way to preachy now and just how many serial rapists can you write about?
Now in April NBC starts it’s streaming Peacock Service, included will be all the Dick Wolf shows. I prefer the original Law & Order, and the rest.
I prefer the original Law & Order, especially the first 4 seasons.
Every time I witched L&O they laced Rat BS into the script and story line. Every time. I even played a game, I would time how long it would take. The fastest was 15 seconds.
Detective Munch’s backstory had him as a Baltimore cop before he moved to NY. Somehow NBC and Fox agreed to have him play his role as Baltimore PD Detective Munch in a flashback episode of the X-Files.
speaking of the liberal bent, has anybody noted that there have been weekly if not more homosexuals with “husbands” on Jeopardy?......we turned it off last night....I won’t have that crap thrown in my face...
Lol. Cute
I have to Sesame Street credit for that skit.
