“Through our negotiations, America has secured strong commitments from the Taliban to permanently sever their ties to international terrorists.”

As a throw in we get the Brooklyn Bridge, too.

-— I don’t buy criticism from Bolton or the like either, though.

Trump made a great point that he had his chance.

We defeated the Taliban in one week.

Then we neglected to de-Taliban the country the same way we de-Nazified Germany and ended Japan’s emperor worship etc...

It all could have been finished 17 years ago or so.

Today is a sad day that marks a victory for the Taliban after they attacked us on our own soil on 911.

That the Taliban exist today bears witness to a US loss.

Bush and Obama admins had ample time and all the resources in the world to eradicate the Taliban, but chose not to.

The Pakistanis WILL continue fighting over there. They have been fighting with the other tribes over there since the beginning of time.
They Afghanis have been fighting since the beginning of time...

They all fight over land, water, past and current family feuds, you-name-it. The Hatfields and McCoys have nothing on them.
Nothing changes over there. It's mountainous, dry and nasty..worthless land. No petroleum, no water, no minerals, just dust and poverty.

Actually there’s a lot of mineral wealth in the mountains there. For example Afghanistan supplied the ancient world with Lapis Lazuli semiprecious gems from Sumerian times to Roman. Lots of other stuff too. Not saying we should stay just there is considerable mineral wealth there.

If this were true enough to mine and make money the country wouldn't be so poor. They ARE poor and totally engaged in continual warfare. Go read some history of Afghanistan...the land of he afghanis...

They seemed to have been at war forever. That was one place that Americans COULD NOT travel to. Too dangerous.

Taliban-why was Trump trying to make it sound like the Taliban are not that bad. Have they reformed?

Just tell people the truth, and not coat the Taliban in honey & sprinkles, with “mmm, mmm good.”

So you want him to keep US mil there and keep fighting the Taliban? You think A’stan government should not take responsibility for their country? And that human beings cannot change for the better?

It is true !
Both ancient history, modern history (UK colonial office surveys, what surveys the older Afghan governments could cobble together, Soviet surveys & recently (last 10 years) a USGS survey all confirm. Recent Chinese surveys (which I know the least about!) again confirm.

You have to have a stable society to take advantage of it.
If you can’t take advantage of it, it doesn’t matter if you have it.

Again not advocating we stay!

Afghanistan is all about the poppy fields and who get the drugs the cia or the tally.Or,who gets the UN/US billions which are spread all over the region with payoffs, graft and corruption so widespread no one wants to see the US pull out and stop leafing all that cash all over the region.

You can be sure potus knows what is going on. He’s just trying to put the best face on it as he should. But he knows it’s all about corruption from top to bottom and he wants nothing to do with it.Potus is tired of the cabal calling all the shots and bleeding the country dry year after year.

Mexico is a stable country and they have MUCH in the way of raw materials. Yet, the people generally are poor. The relatively few wealthy families own the bank$, land, military and police. Their leaders, of course, come from those families.
There are exceptions...but not many.

They are an Afghanistan of North, Central and South America.

It makes me EXTREMELY grateful to live here. HOW BLESSED we are!
