My Mother is in hospice care with a terminal health situation and if she gets sick all they will do is make her comfortable

She is 88 years old. legally blind and dependent on a caregiver to get her day to day

You and I face the fact that like other viruses our elders immune systems are by and large very weak. My Mother rarely gets out and for the most part confined to her home.

So having said that I keep a close watch on the whole thing as I am sure you do. But so much of what is out there is hyped up in my view to drive peoples behaviors one way or another.

I live in Arizona which is the hot destination for retirees and not just from the US, Canadians are very typical here as are folks from just about every state in the US

I do not see the same response here as others report, and the population of people at risk is big and growing

So we both watch and try to sift the wheat from the chaff and find peace in what we know and pray for God to watch over our loved ones

Thanks. Not too concerned unless you’re near the bad end of the “hockey stick” (age wise) which I am (69). I do take rational precautions but am otherwise healthy and NOT WORRED AT ALL.

“....widespread flu vaccinations.”

Did anyone ask what strains were in that flu vaccination you took. I took one that had 2. The CDC this year is concerned about 4 other viruses:

A/ Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus
A/ Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016 (H3N2)-like virus
A/B/ Colorado/06/2017-like virus (B/Victoria/2/87 lineage)
A/B/ Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata/16/88 lineage)

“A” category is the most threatening of the 4. Based on the number of subtypes and strains, influenza “A” could theoretically have 198 different combinations, but only 131 have been identified. I feel better already. But when someone tells me the C-19 is both a SARS and MERS virus, making it both A & B, I wait for the another piece of the sky to hit.

These do not count the other strains that float through, only the ones the have reason to believe can be a problem. C-19 was a surprise and not expected. The flu strains were decided in February 2018 for the upcoming flu season. But don’t despair, they have no idea how many strains from the A and B category will come through so that shot might get 1 with pure luck. Especially when their estimate falls short of unidentifiable strains we are getting. They don’t have a clue.

111,000 cases, 101,000 minor or recovered 3500 deaths

3,500 / 111,000 = 3.15% death rate. That's very bad.

“Everybody dies” - Bill Barr

15 Vets commit suicide each day

30,000 people die of the flu each year

And if you use Joe Biden’s math, 150,000,000 people died from gun violence

Put it into perspective, it is very small chance that you or your loved one will die from the cornyvirus, if you run the numbers, you or your loved onee have a higher chance of dying from a car accident.

What stocks do you have a short?

Am not saying “end of Trump”.
More surprised that nothing has seriously backfired on him yet.

Do you know what hardened steel is?

That is president Trump

He is hardened steel

The media turned him into hardened steel, they would put him in the fire over everything, so now nothing really matters.

Not ‘could be’, it’s inevitable that the death rate will plummet.

As the numerator increases as more testing is done the denominator won’t increase proportionately.

No, I’m not stopping you. You have the right to mock dead Americans, if you insist. If Obama can mock dead Americans as just “bumps in the road”, you certainly can join in belittling the deaths of fellow citizens as the bizarre need overtakes you. As I said, lovely person.

The percentage could increase, decrease or stay steady. Going by world wide numbers, it might drop to about 1.5 to 2%. We’ll know for certain at the end of the season - whenever that will occur.

I thought the 22 deaths is the total since the virus started spreading, not the total just for today.

111,000 confirmed cases, but the disease is said to be often asymptomatic, or to resemble a common cold and not be reported. So the number of infected might be much higher than the reported 111,000 which would significantly lower the death rate.

The other day I heard health officials put the death rate at something under 1% - maybe three or four times the rate of flu deaths, but still well under 1%.

The crash in oil prices could be more of a problem than the virus...

It is important in a lot of states..

You have to remember that the total cases may be vastly under counted. That would skew the percentage considerably. We do not really know what the contradicted number really is, for a couple of reasons. People got ill but never sought medical aide and recovered anyway. China is not an open regime, so they may have downplayed the numbers, and that could be deaths as well. In addition just about everyone, if not all, in this country who died had underlying health issues to begin with. If you have a compromised immune system your chances of dying are substantially higher than those who have healthy immune systems. Some with really healthy immune systems may never even exhibit the symptoms of the virus at all, but they are infecting others nonetheless, until their system eradicates the virus completely within them.

So you cannot go by the percentage at all. But when just the U.S. has had 20,000 deaths from the flu this flu season, which is 5 times the death rate so far of the coronavirus worldwide, most people would conclude that the flu is deadlier, percentage be damned. So that is another reason why just looking at the percentage is not really a good indicator from which to quantify this virus.

There were 11,000 deaths from the swine flu, H1N1, in this country. In 2009, H1N1 was spreading fast around the world, so the World Health Organization called it a pandemic. Since then, people have continued to get sick from swine flu, but not as many. There wasn't anywhere near the press reporting of the swine flu as there is with this new coronavirusu. Why? Because Obama was president then, and "Bad Orange Man" is president now. Right now there is as much misinformation being passed around as there is good information. The bad information is designed to increase people's anxiety level regarding the virus.

Now if you are an older person with a compromised immune system due to other medical issues, you need to take extra precautions. I won't say that this virus is a nothing burger, except at this stage it is a nothing burger, but that could change. But putting things into prospective means that the hysteria being generated is nothing more than manufactured at this stage of the virus. We will know more when warmer weather starts taking hold in the northern hemisphere.
