In 1st Minute of Debate, Biden Has Hacking Cough and Breaks CDC Hygiene Rules as He Tries To Recover

The main topic for debate during Sunday’s face-off between former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was the coronavirus pandemic sweeping through the United States.

And the theme was clear.

According to both 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, President Donald Trump was not doing a good enough job of handling the crisis.

But Biden could not make it out of his first answer of the debate without breaking one of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s hygiene guidelines for protecting others from the spread of the virus.

“What do you say to the American people who are confronting this new reality,” CNN anchor Jake Tapper asked.

Biden coughed within the first few seconds of his answer.

“First of all, my heart goes out to those,” he said, before coughing, “who have already lost someone.”

Notably, Biden covered his face with his hand while he coughed, which goes against CDC hygiene guidelines.

“Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow,” the CDC’s website reads.

Oh boy. The “filibuster by coughing fit” strategy. Where have we seen that one before?

Biden looked strong and in command of facts tonight. No gaffes. He wiped the floor with Sanders and won the debate.

Fake news? Why was the Twitter feed cancelled? Why is no-one else mentioning it?

Didn't watch it, but if Biden did cough into his hand, as the headline reads, Bernie won right there, IMHO. After 2 or 3 days straight of the CDC and every politician telling us to cough into a hanky or our elbow, Slow Joe blew it immediately.

It wasn’t a hacking cough. It was more like he just cleared his throat. The article is bs.

I was surprised at the lack of gaffes.

Agreed. I hope that he’s not that good sounding when Trump and him debate in the fall.

You’ll find me at the head of the line to criticize Biden, but this one doesn’t cut it. We were taught to turn our heads and cover our mouths with a fist when we grew up. It’s an automatic response through decades of repetition. This cough into you elbow thing is new to me and by the time I have coughed I’m somewhere in the middle of pulling my fist away and bring my elbow to my mouth. It does no good to go after Biden on this one. He’s a gaffe a day, just give him a few hours and he’ll do something really worthy of criticism.

I suspect that resting the last few days has helped him. No way does he have the stamina to be POTUS though. People may well be voting for whomever the VP pick is.

Italy’s coronavirus toll surges as worries grow over hospitals
(Sunday March 15)

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy/italys-coronavirus-toll-surges-as-worries-grow-over-hospitals-idUSKBN2120XN

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy recorded 368 more deaths from the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday, its biggest one day rise, amid growing concern about the ability of its strained health system to cope with the relentless increase in new cases.

While the virus has begun spreading rapidly across Europe, Italy remains the second most heavily affected country in the world after China, where the illness first emerged, and the outbreak has shown no signs of slowing.

The government is working urgently on procuring more protective equipment, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said, adding there was maximum attention on helping Lombardy, the northern region where the virus emerged just over three weeks ago.

“Our priority is to keep doctors, nurses and all our health personnel safe,” Conte said in a statement a week after his government imposed a virtual lockdown across the country in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

With 24,747 cases and 1,809 deaths by Sunday - a rise of 368 or 25% in the death toll in just 24 hours - Italy’s experience has offered an alarming example for other European countries which have begun seeing sharp rises in cases over recent days.

Lombardy, the heavily populated area around the financial capital Milan, has been the worst-affected region with 1,218 deaths. Of those, 252 were recorded in the last 24 hours.

To me, his one cough was quite brief. But did anyone notice he got the one virus nomenclature bass-ackwards. He called h1n1, n1h1. It appeared he may have had the questions beforehand, and a crib sheet of answers. He made no attempt to hide it. This was the only Rat debate I watched an hour of this one, hoping for Biden to really mess up, but he was well rehearsed and had plenty of notes.
