Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States, plans to hire 150,000 temporary workers by the end of May as the coronavirus pandemic continues to sweep through the country.

The company said it is hiring the associates to work in stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers.

"These roles will be temporary at first, but many will convert to permanent roles over time," Walmart said in a press release. "We've reached out to industry groups representing restaurants and hospitality to facilitate temporary roles that can be a bridge for their employees during this difficult time."

The company said it plans to expedite the application time from two weeks to 24 hours.

That would be nice, but it wouldn’t work at my local Walmart Superstore. Their shelves, and freezer cases have been empty for over years, not just during this mess. Extra help means nothing if you don’t have the products for them to put on the shelves.

There’s plenty of supply.

But with snow storms closing parts of I-70 and I-80, transport will take a bit longer.

Safeway and SaveMart are advertising for temp workers.

My Wal-Mart has no excuse for shelves and freezers being empty these past 3 years. It always looks like a going out of business sale there.

My local WalMart Neighborhood Market has had a long term stocking problem too.
Pretty much empty shelves today...they get to start from scratch now!

Great. They’re all hiring now, just when I can’t leave the house.

This level of hiring leads me to believe that we’re headed towards a Wuhan-style lockdown, as it will be REQUIRED to have food deliveries to people who are no longer permitted to leave their homes.

Expect it soon, and if you do have a generator (or two), then FUEL-UP!, now.

This is why rumors of a national lockdown are most likely hooey. It simply still takes too many people showing up at work every day to keep the nation fed.

Nice that you (and many) are in a position to pass on these jobs. Pay will rise if needed to meet the demand, as this is part of our critical supply chain and the US will mainline cash to Walmart if needed.

This is great news but are they still eligible to receive any new “crisis” benefits.

I agree with your comments.

There cannot be a total lockdown/quarantine. There are many people that have critical essential jobs that need to be at work.

Seriously, if we were all locked up in our homes with no one at all providing needed functions and services we would all starve.

You mentioned to keep the nation fed. Imagine not letting farmers out to plant crops or care for livestock.

“But with snow storms closing parts of I-70 and I-80, transport will take a bit longer.”

Toss in that Colorado has shutdown I-25 and I-70 for much of every day, and I see trucks lined up for miles in backed up traffic due to the freeways being closed. Yesterday CDOT had I-25 south of Castle Rock closed for hours.

The democrats took over Colorado and now the State can’t seem to keep the freeways open.

“This is why rumors of a national lockdown are most likely hooey. “

Except they are not. Several States are now in martial law with total lockdown and the closing of businesses.

Colorado’s governor just announced even more businesses that must close including hair salons and barbers.
