Freeper Ham Net

Posted on 03/24/2020 5:02:36 PM PDT by dis.kevin

I came across a post by abigkahuna N6TDG about having a Free Republic Ham Net for shut ins for the China Virus. I think it's a great idea. Big Kahuna mentioned 80 or 40 meters. I don't have an 80 meter antenna due to space restrictions so that won't work for me. We should keep it in the general frequencies of 40 meters so that more operators would be able to participate and Big suggested an evening net. I'm KC3OLY and I'm sure there are a lot of other Freepers out there with their amateur radio licenses. Come on everyone, lets get this going. This is what amateur radio is all about.

I have short wave receivers, would love to listen,
get perspectives from around the country. When the gov.
takes the internet down, we have an alternate source to maintain contact. (until they jam us, like the Soviets did)

Just know that your ham call sign is searchable in the FCC database. If you give your call sign, you will be outing yourself for doxing because your name and address will be discoverable.

I don’t have a radio/antenna set-up here at our winter home, but it could have merit. I’d be willing to set something up.

Your 40m aught to work OK for 80m, or am I remembering that wrong?

I do 80m. My radio (old Kenwood) has a prob with 40.

For starters, a couple of considerations:

1/ If we’re all extras that’s great. If not, it’s gotta be 7.175 or above.

2/ From my QTH - central Florida - the Latinos start rolling in about 2000L. Before that, the evening gray line propagation up the east side of the USA is great.

3/ Mornings, about 0700L might be a good starting point.

I have an off center fed dipole and it would never to for 80. But an 80 would tune for 40. I actually want to get an antenna up for 75 meter, but I live on a very small lot

With a shortwave radio you may be able to tune in to many of the amateur radio bands. I’ve heard lot’s of Italians on the radio recently. None have really discussed the virus in Italy. I think they’re just glad to have something to do.

I’m currently waiting for my 20 meter net to begin. Our club had to nix our club meeting for this month.

I’m an Extra Class, living in Northern Virginia, but if I publish my call sign, I’ll never feel as comfortable on this forum as I do now. 40 meters is best for me for CONUS. I have two double bazooka antennas in an inverted sloping V faceing East. The soil beneath them is solid marine clay, and it acts almost like a mirror. With only 200 watts, my signal from Halifax to Brazil and eastward to the Ukraine is phenomenal. Westward to Texas it’s just okay, and further west it’s nothing.

Yep, stopped giving out my call years ago for that reason.

Yep, just go to the fcc.gov website, under "Licensing & Databases".

I sent an e-mail to my Dad reminding him of his expiration date. I'm expecting a reply asking how I knew, but he may figure it out.

Jeff, Peters, and Michael renewed their licenses last year. Chuck's license expires in a couple of years.

So how do you have a QSO if the other operator doesn’t get your call? I take that you ignore the FCC required to ID at the end of a transmission or every 10 minutes.
