A prepping thread. It occurs to me that Free Republic used to have a great many prepping threads. Once a week or more. Several ping lists. But now you rarely see them. I got to thinking; what changed? Answer: Obama is no longer president.

The risks and dangers America faced when Obola was president are no longer here.

Yes prepping is still essential, as we can plainly see. But thank God we have President Trump in charge now instead of that Kenyan

Living in the foothills in California, we have been prepared for no power during fires. This means no water from the well. We prepared over the years and store gravity fed water in 2500 gal tank, and have just recently acquired a generator to keep our food in the frig from spoiling. The only thing we did not foresee with THIS crisis, did we stock up enough on toilet paper? Who knew that would be a major deal>?

I may run out of horse shoes and mule shoes. It depends on how much I have to use them.

I could do with another dozen cans of coffee.

I don’t really consider us preppers we just live way out in the middle of nowhere and it is a long ways to town and back. In the winter is snows and I have to plow a dozen miles to get a vehicle out.

So. Our pantry is 16X14 we have 4 freezers, make our own power have a private water source and an additional 50 head of livestock still eating on the pastures.

I found that watching the news carefully and keeping ny anntenae up had me 2 to 3 weeks ahead of everyone else’s panic.

Advice? ANTICIPATE.

Watching the news talk on FOX earlier today a guest speaker remarked that we can probably expect the explosion of virus infections that we see in NY City
to be happen in other cities where people are crammed together in similar living conditions.

He said it will just take time for it to spread to other metro areas and then build up to crisis levels.

That got me thinking about what would happen if this virus really does spread beyond what the government and medical industries can control.

What if it hits hard outside the cities too?

What if it starts taking a significant toll on dairy farms, milk processors, bakeries, large farm including beef, pork and poultry producers.
And truck drivers, train and barge operators, packing houses, canneries, manufacturers of paper products, meds, etc., etc., etc.?

May or may not happen.

But if you don't already have preps for a longer term now is the time to stock up on what is available.

If the food and critical manufactured goods industries are hit hard it will be too late.

If we do get some sort of a windfall check from the government ours will be invested in even more preps than we now have.

Just in case.

.

What I have learned in this time.

When the Governor speaks the township board has to comply. BUT they are also willing to be reasonable and have some flex in certain areas. In others they have no flex at all.

You will quickly begin to crave fresh food. The greenhouse has been moved up on the list of things to do. Just being able to have some salad ingredients available is a good thing.

If you are having people move in with you have things for them to do.

Realize that anyone who moves in with you will want to bring their pets along too. If you have pets this can be an issue.

Sell the perishables that you have excess of to your neighbors. They will be happy to get them. Reducing your price is fine, giving stuff away is not wise.

I had an interesting experience tonight. My neighbor, 60 or so year old lawyer, head of small firm, very solid guy, stopped me in the driveway and asked if he might borrow one of my guns for household defense. No problem, I have tons. But It occurred to me that he was actually worried about home invasion. In my neighborhood that is laughable. The teens all look like Harry Potter and the adults are either doctors or lawyers or corporate types.

I wonder why he is afraid all of a sudden. Very puzzling.

I have an old 12 gauge break action with a 16” barrel. A monkey could make it work. I can only pray he doesn't have to fire it.

Any suggestions for those that are full-time RVers? We don’t have room to stockpile stuff.

Please add me to your ping list. The only comment I have to add now is, COVID has not caused me to dip into my preps . I’m trying to think, what is the next shoe to drop?
