What is 'Tiger King' and why is everybody watching it right now?

During one of the many FaceTime chats that fill my evening calendar, my best friend Andy remarked, "You have to watch 'Tiger King.' You lived in Florida, so you will love it."

Tigers? Florida? I was intrigued. What is "Tiger King?" Having literally no idea what it was about, I watched the trailer later that night. This tweet perfectly sums up my reaction:

I wouldn't label it that. It's more like watching a huge train wreck. The cliff hanger is which car derails next. Much profanity, alternative lifestyle, and criminal revelations. A lot of these people have carney/circus backgrounds, iirc.

There was a series called "Fatal Attractions" on Animal Planet about ten years ago which reported on various people/lunatics getting killed by their exotic pets.
Chimps, snakes, big cats, bears, crocodiles, plus one idiot stomped by his pet bull.
