Hydroxychloroquine-Azithromycin Treatment for COVID-19 Shown to be Effective in an 80-Patient Study
IHU-Méditerranée Infection, Marseille, France ^ | March 27, 2020 | Didier Raoult, et. al.

Posted on 03/28/2020 9:21:58 AM PDT by Raymond Pamintuan

Abstract We need an effective treatment to cure COVID-19 patients and to decrease the virus carriage duration. In 80 in-patients receiving a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin we noted a clinical improvement in all but one 86 year-old patient who died, and one 74 year old patient still in intensive care unit. A rapid fall of nasopharyngeal viral load tested by qPCR was noted, with 83% negative at Day7, and 93% at Day8. Virus cultures from patient respiratory samples were negative in 97.5% patients at Day5. This allowed patients to rapidly de discharge from highly contagious wards with a mean length of stay of five days. We believe other teams should urgently evaluate this cost-effective therapeutic strategy, to both avoid the spread of the disease and treat patients as soon as possible before severe respiratory irreversible complications take hold.

Clinical and microbiological effect of a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin in 80 COVID-19 patients with at least a six-day follow up: an observational study Running title: Hydroxychloroquine-Azithromycin and COVID-19

So are the French going to be bold (smart) enough to give this to all in France? Or at least to those exposed?

I think we have millions of doses- each person is given a 5 day 2 times a day prescription- it is estimated that between 20,00, and 60,000 will die from this (bout on par with regular flues)- so if all 60,000 were treated, that amounts to only 600,000 pills- We not only have millions of pills, but Israel is giving us 3 million more in the coming days, and then another 15 million soon after i believe-

There’s likely no danger of running out- we have enough even to treat everyone who gets the virus even, regardless of how severe it is if they want to do that- plus have plenty left over for the other conditions that were already using it-

see my post above- we’ve got and will have plenty- especially after Israel sends us millions of doses

What’s the date of the paper? Isn’t this the same study that made a big splash LAST WEEK??

Their “control group” seemed to be other studies or theoretical considerations...not the best to be sure...a couple or more of these types of studies may indicate that the meds may be very useful. I hope larger cohorts and multiarmed treatment protocols and even an untreated group (IIRC, if treatment seems to help overwhelmingly with no severe toxicities...non treatment arms may be discontinued) can be done and results reported as soon as possible. So far...looking promising. More studies please. FAST.

People in the control group would still receive ventilators, Theraflu, and whatever else they do to treat this, just not the h-chloroquine. A control group is needed to see how this compares with what we’ve been doing so far.

You mean those same lefty states who call us knuckle draggers, or flat Earthers, because we don’t accept settled science?

I agree. With all the CV patients you would think they would have a bigger sample size.

Trying to create a $1000 pill...vs an available 5 cent pill.

Don’t know if Edwards is liberal enough to ban it, but he should’ve closed every road out of NOLA a week and a half ago.

Anyone who bans proper prescriptions in their state while allowing weed is a hypocrite.

New York has a huge chunk of all these virus cases in the United States, same with California. What color are they again?

I have no idea how the control groups are selected, and how they are “protected.” There docs on the forum who might be able to address that.

I appreciate your point. But the skeptic in me has to ask what would have happened had we done nothing. I guess you could look at a randomly selected group of the people beforehand.

I am not trying to dump on the study. I think it’s great, and I would be digging up as much of that stuff as I could if my wife were sick.

I am merely being conservative in rushing to judgement—because you know Fauci is.

From the studY

Other studies have pointed out that drug repurposing may identify approved drugs that could be useful for the treatment of this disease including, notably, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, as well as anti-diabetics such as metformin, angiotensin receptor inhibitors such as sartans, or statins such as simvastatin

I'm taking both metformin and simvastatin.

For those who they consider desperate enough to try it on, being in a control group might have been a death sentence...

I am going to assume your answer it trying to be helpful, not unreasonable. In the report they could have posted the results of a random selection of people who were treated with the same level of treatment BEFORE the test.

The control group is used to identify reactions based on a cross section of Comorbidities so that possible side effects and interactions with other drugs can be study in contrast to the proposed treatment.

I imagine there are a bunch of places like that...say Nevada and MN.

I was concerned that Washington state’s very stupid liberal Governor Inslee would band it. Governor Inslee who once said, “We have the best dope.”

I looked up Washington state, though, and the University of Washington is administering hydroxy to patients hospitalized with coronavirus.
