I heard the leaky hull was scheduled for repair this past January, but for some reason is was deferred until July. They probably had a pump working to keep it afloat, but something (further decay?) increased the inflow of water during the night and overwhelmed the pump.
Long ago I spent a terribly cold night on that ship with my daughter's 5th grade class.
