Jan Howard, a longtime singer who spent nearly five decades as part of country musics famed Grand Ole Opry, has died.
She was 91.
Howard died Saturday in Gallatin, Tenn., the Grand Ole Opry announced.
Jan Howard was a force of nature in country music, at the Opry, and in life, said Dan Rogers, the musical institutions vice president and executive producer. We were all so lucky so many nights to hear her voice on stage and to catch up with her backstage. Were all better for having had her in our lives.
The Grand Ole Opry, which Howard joined 49 years ago, announced that its livestreamed concert that was being held Saturday night was being dedicated to Howard.
Youre forever a Grand Lady of the Opry and of our hearts, reads a tweet from the Opry.
Howard is survived by one of her three children, Carter A. Howard, in addition to two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Born in West Plains, Miss., in 1929, Howard enjoyed a successful recording career in which she had more than 20 songs land on the Billboard country music chart, including Top 10 singles in Bad Seed and Evil on Your Mind.
She was the oldest living member of the Opry, according to The Tennessean.
91 is a good life. RIP Jan Howard, and to her family and friends, take comfort in the knowledge she won’t have to live through the hell on Earth that has been hoisted on us this year.
Plus Joe Diffee. That’s two greats in one day that have close ties to the Opry.
Believe I saw her on both my visits to the Opry in the mid 90s. RIP.
Did she die of the virus? If not,I’m surprised that there are other causes of death going on in this world.
No doubt the death will be counted Coronavirus.
RIP.
