Coronavirus Response – Too Many of the Wrong People In Charge

While there are always exceptions, how do people get ahead in government versus how they get ahead in the private sector? Most people familiar with and experienced in both areas would probably agree with the following generalities:

Government: Not screwing up, and time in service. (John/Mary would be good for this job. He/She has been here a long time and doesn’t make mistakes.)

Private Sector: Being successful, getting things done that need doing. (John/Mary would be good for this job. He/She understands priorities, takes initiative, and finds a way to achieve the objective.)

Which group is now primarily in charge of our responses to the Coronavirus? Government. Precisely the wrong people. The government’s priority is to PROTECT people, and because of that, becomes ineffective when that fails and the task becomes SAVING people. Many of the rules and regulations they put into place to PROTECT people now get in the way of accomplishing this new task.

American citizens will be better served by the Government doing all it can to ‘get out of the way’ of the private sector in responding to the Coronavirus calamity – quickly take a look at the rules and regulations that are tying the private sector’s hands in creating and implementing good remedies, and then quickly revoking, suspending, or revising them to let the private sector loose on this problem. The FDA comes to mind here, and there are plenty more getting in the way, too.

Great rewards entail taking risks - not a forte of government officials. Their world consists primarily of rulebooks, not playbooks. (Exception – military, thank goodness.). So please government, do all you can do to turn as much of the efforts in responding to Coronavirus over to those who are good at, and built for it – the private sector. We’ll be much better off, and you can take the credit. Remember the Clint Eastwood line – “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

I am very thankful that we have a President who understands all of this, and encourage him to continue his efforts to keep the private sector at the forefront and support it.

I think we have a lot of the right people in charge, excluding of course a few of the obvious.

Government promotes the most ambitious, not the best. Why anyone would put blind trust in government officials is beyond me.

The government’s priority is to PROTECT people

Oh that is utter nonsense. They are not even that benign. Most of them are just trying to protect and exercise their bureaucratic prerogatives, expand their staff and their influence and get themselves promoted so they have [very slightly more pay] and more perks. Any calculation about public benefit is so remote from what drives the bureaucratic animal as to be irrelevant.

promotes the most ambitious

Defined as those most willing to play bureaucratic games to get ahead while dispensing with any notion of doing anything useful.

Dr Doom is the perfect example of why you get rid of every holdover. A Hillary loyalist who has become the darling of CNN and a huge problem. His duplicitous undermining of the President has cost millions more jobs than necessary. Now every time there is a briefing without him the MSM creeps shout where is Dr Fauci! where is Dr Fauci! Never Trump could not imagine a guy in Fauci’s position would end up being the problem he has become. The lesson is fire anyone who gave one dime or complementary word to your opposition.

Now I know what Trump meant by quoting the Jews at Masada: “We’re going BIG!”

Having worked with the Emergency Preparedness groups in my area, I will tell you there are dedicated, well trained people working on those plans. But...at every step of the way they were hindered by co-workers who deemed them the doom squad. Managers who did not, or could not, free up their staffs for training. And finally, budget managers and CFO’s who thought it was an unnecessary expense.

Rotating stock meant drawing down the emergency PPE in your hospital during flu season, and then rushing to get it restocked before the next JC inspection.

I’ve worked with EP Managers who came out of budget meetings being told their PPE replacement budget had gotten slashed with the reason, “If there is an emergency, we will have a blank check to get that stuff from the supply chain folks”. Or, “Our reserve is at the “system” level. That is the strength of the larger company.”

In the end, hospital administrators and CFOs should be flogged in the public town square .

Government is a necessary evil but they are still evil and always SELF serving.
