Nearly 1,000 employees found out they were fired in the mail, a sign of the times during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company who owns Jim's Restaurants recently closed all of its restaurants temporarily.
So, the nearly 1,000 previously furloughed employees have now been fired, and were notified through a postcard.
"It's just ugly, its just an ugly way to send out that vibe," said former employee Chris Tippery.
For the past two years Chris Tippery has worked as a cook at Jim's Restaurant, until March 30.
That's when the owner of Frontier Enterprises, Jimmy Hasslocher made what he calls the most responsible, proactive and painful decision to temporarily close all restaurants including Jim's, Frontier Burger, and Magic Time Machine locations in San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin.
"Texas is supposed to keep Texas up and that's not what this is, and in a post card, I got it in a post card you know, it's just not right," Tippery said.
Tippery understands the decision was driven by concerns over COVID-19, but he's disappointed by how he and his colleagues found out.
"There are so many companies in San Antonio that are taking care of their employees, Tippery said. Bill Miller's is one of them and so many others who are giving raises and helping people along and to just be cut off at the knees."
In a statement, the company's CEO Jimmy Hasslocher said this:
"With almost 1,000 employees, the difficult decision was made to send the notice by mail, so that all employees would receive the information as quickly as possible. Under normal business circumstances, we would never have used this method of communication to deliver such devastating news, but the current circumstances made immediacy our priority so that our employees could apply for unemployment and health insurance." Employees were told the company hopes to have them back as soon as possible.
"If this is the way they're going to treat their employees now, do you really want to go back to a company that's just going to send you a postcard to tell you you're terminated," said Tippery.
Hasslocher went on to say he understands the impact this decision has on the livelihood of its hardworking employees.
What’s the problem...He wants them to at least get unemployment. He can still hire them back at a later time.
Fired, yet they want them back. Cant undo the damage.
I’m going back to work tomorrow. The grocery stores are open. Everyone is walking around. Lets Live again. Come on I dare You????!!!
Is there a difference between getting fired vs. getting laid off in regards to getting unemployment?
I think he did it the best way.
How else could he have dune it, phoned each one for ten minutes? That would have taken at least two weeks and almost a month.
Depending on the state if you are fired for cause, you may not get unemployment?
WTF ever
Your bene is $507 from Texas and 600 from Fed
1,100 per week is 4,400 a month
That may be a raise in wages for many
I think so too. The employees have documentation.
Where did you get that number? I thought it was based on how much you made?
If your fired with cause you can’t collect unemployment.
If you laid off (work force reduction) then you can collect unemployment.
“If this is the way they’re going to treat their employees now, do you really want to go back to a company that’s just going to send you a postcard to tell you you’re terminated,” said Tippery.
If you are not at your workplace, how should they notify you?
If you had forty employees at your restaurant (which is shut-down entirely), and tried to start at 8 AM calling each up to say you were furloughing them....you’d still be working on completing the list at 8 PM that evening.
People would be in disbelief....then they’d bring up their rent, their $500 monthly car-payment....their situation with the credit card debt, etc. You’d try to console the poor gal, and her situation....but if you got no open door...no customers...how can you carry on a $80,000 monthly payroll situation?
They could buy radio ads and read the names over the radio?
I’ve been thru something similar...back in the mid-1980s while working for Burroughs Computer Corporation, which later became Unisys after the merger with Sperry-Univac, we went thru one layoff after another...it became so frequent that toward the end of my stay there, two faxes would show up on Friday afternoon...one that said come back on Monday for work and the other that said, get lost....
Or just send out memes.
Half are scared that it will happen. The other half are hoping it happens.
Not joking
Really?!
So, if you're a fry cook, and you show up one minute late to your shift on Tuesday, and you overcook a burger on Wednesday, and your boss fires you, citing those reasons - you can't collect unemployment?!
Regards,
What did they want, singing telegrams?
