John Prine, Who Chronicled the Human Condition in Song, Dies at 73
NYT ^ | 4/7/2020 | William Grimes

John Prine, the raspy-voiced country-folk singer whose ingenious lyrics to songs by turns poignant, angry and comic made him a favorite of Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and others, died Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He was 73. The cause was complications from Covid-19, his family said. Mr. Prine underwent cancer surgery in 1998 to remove a tumor in his neck identified as squamous cell cancer, which had damaged his vocal cords. In 2013, he had part of one lung removed to treat lung cancer.

I am sad to hear this; equally sad I never saw him perform.

Liked him.

Saw him back in the late 70's, I think.

This song I remember; did not not he was a co-writer.

In 1974, singer David Allan Coe achieved considerable success on the country charts with Goodman's and John Prine's "You Never Even Called Me by My Name", a song which good-naturedly spoofed stereotypical country music lyrics. Prine refused to take a songwriter's credit for the song, although Goodman bought Prine a jukebox as a gift from his publishing royalties. Goodman's name is mentioned in Coe's recording of the song, in a spoken epilogue in which Goodman and Coe discuss the merits of "the perfect country and western song."

Discovered John Prine on "Outlaw Country" (previously "Americana") on the Sirius/XM network.

His catalog is well worth exploring. RIP.

Even though I was somewhat expecting he might not make it, this gutted me when I read it. He has been on my personal playlist for decades now.

Just hate to lose such a treasure.

Rest in peace, John.

We saw John twice in January at the 30A Songwriter Festival, 4 times in October at the All The Best Fest in the Dominican Republic, NYE 2018-19 at the Grand Ole Opry, and in May 2018 at Beaver Dam KY within 10 miles of the former site of Paradise, KY (Muhlenberg County).

Needless to say, we are bummed.

He was a great songwriter and story teller. RIP John.

Saw him perform live probably 5 or 6 times. First time back in ‘78.

Putting on a little Illegal Smile on his honor!
