New York Covid 19 Data in a Chart
The Covid Tracking Project ^ | The Atlantic, Robinson Meyer and Alexis Madrigal

The COVID Tracking Project obtains, organizes, and publishes high-quality data required to understand and respond to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. We will do this work until official national sources take over and publish comprehensive testing and outcomes data.

In early March, two journalists at The Atlantic, Robinson Meyer and Alexis Madrigal, built a tracker for their COVID-19 testing investigation. Separately, Jeff Hammerbacher, Founder and General Partner at Related Sciences, built a tracking spreadsheet. The two efforts came together March 7, and made a call for volunteers, and the COVID Tracking Project was born.

Alexis Madrigal now leads the project. Jeff Hammerbacher has mostly returned to his work and we send eternal gratitude his way. Erin Kissane is our managing editor. Our team now includes more than 100 volunteer data-grabbers, journalists, scientists, visualization specialists, designers, project managers, and many other great people. We can't list them all for privacy reasons, but here are some of our stalwart contributors:

I know if you make a chart its easier for the maker to understand. Not sure what is not understandable in this chart. Nothing is doubled, tripled, or quadrupled counted in the data. I specifically even made bar lines for cumulative and total count for the day to separate the actual numbers of the day from the cumulative because the cumulative does look exponential of which the media loves to use because it incites fear and worry about not seeing a turn around with active measures in place. I wanted to visually see the trend graph for total positive numbers of the day to also visually see if the graph would show exponential growth of positive cases and it really doesn’t.

I am aware of this information that you linked. What was your point of the article when comparing that to the chart?

If it is saying the death count is overrepresented, that is not why I created this chart. I created it to separate the cumulative from the daily so the real “growth” of positive test numbers could be visually seen. So, what was your point in sharing that?
