I have observed that Inspector Morse and some others sometimes order a “half”

That is I believe 8 oz and the size of my favorite Caronita that is 7 1/2 oz

Many years ago, men ordered a pint, whereas women were expected to order a half-pint. Ordering a full pint wasn’t considered ladylike.

Maybe the inspector ordered a half because he was on duty.

A “half” is 10 fluid ounces, which is half of an imperial pint.
