I just finished an online chat with my HS girlfriend. She's a RN in a NJ hospital. I learned a few things that are going on in that facility.
They are packed. The hospital went into a "divert status" two weeks ago. That means heart attacks, strokes, car accidents, etc. have to go elsewhere. The ICU is all COVID-19, all ventilated. The ER has a large number of ventilated patients also. Previously unused wards that had one time been pediatrics are now negative pressure COVID wards, all full.
The initial order for most COVID-19 patients includes hydroxychloroquine and an azithromycin IV. Those that come off a ventilator behave as if they suffered a stroke. The hospital is looking at high flow oxygen instead of intubation for some. She's unaware of administering nitric oxide.
They have patients coming in that are inmates or workers from a nearby prison. They are used to inmates, but not in these numbers.
We didn't get around to talking about testing.
I read somewhere that 2/3 of those who go on ventilators do not survive.
That data about fthe 2/3 ailure rate of patients on ventilators was discussed by Dr.Seheult on one of the MedCram sessions on YouTube.
Which hospital?
Which hospital? Because there were exactly 2 of 80 here that were on divert status as of yesterday. IHME models are way overestimating beds needed versus occupied, and even Comrade Murphy says we have enough beds. And not one article about patients not being able to be treated. Not saying hospitals are not busy, but perhaps a little hyperbole here?
I’m not saying which hospital other than North Jersey.
I just checked the status in NJ. There are more than two hospitals on divert/full status right now. The hospital I wrote about is one of them. It is not a big hospital.

What is it with New York and New Jersey? All these cases? Is it the leaders that are slowing the workers down? What? They have got more deaths than most of the small towns in Washington..

Just saw it’s Northern Jersey which makes sense given its dense population and proximity to NYC.
I haven’t verified this, but I’ve read that Medicare pays triple for a COVID-19 patient on a vent, as opposed to just inpatient hospitalization. And, as someone mentioned, most vent patients don’t survive, which makes room for more people to go on vents and pays the hospital a lot more.

My guess would be Hackensack. It was a major hospital back 50 years ago when I lived in the area and I don’t believe that has changed.

Since you say North Jersey that means likely Bergen or Hudson County.

They have to get zinc sulphate in the mix and administer this as early as possible.
I contacted an aide to Governor Murphy I know but no response this time.
