We already knew Sars could jump to humans. And that it spread by airborne transmission. Epidemic, 2002-3. 2005 Study on Horseshoe bats as carriers of Sars viruses. Feb. 2008 Journal of Virology, the natural bat coronavirus cannot use the human ACE2 receptor to infect humans. 2013, Nature Medicine, Study on Ace-2 and the SHC014/Rs3367 sequences. 2013 Study on Sars amino acids/Ace binding sites. Sep 2015, combining MERS spike (SHC014) WITH BAT virus HKU4 using MA15 mouse backbone. 2018 Chinese study, based on antibody assays of villagers living near bats, providing evidence that direct human jump was unlikely, in the range of about 3% probability.
To clarify, the reason I mentioned MERS research earlier, Journal of Virology, Sep 2015, "Li and Shi jointly conducted a gain-of-function study... on the MERS virus and a bat virus (strain HKU4) in 2015. Since MERS virus can enter human cells but HKU4 can not, they introduced 2 single mutations in the HKU4 spike protein and found that the new mutant S protein can enable HKU4 to enter human cells. If they mutated 2 sites in MERS spike, the resulting MERS pseudovirus (experimental virus) cannot enter human cells anymore."

and? It involved a lot of researchers. We even trained some of them on biosecurity at a Texas facility. Back in 2015 the world still had stars in their eyes concerning China, imagining an evolving, democratically leaning China ready to be accepted in the community of world citizens. Right. The US pulled funding in 2014. But the study was already underway so they got in under the wire. I'm a bit confused on 'funding' tho. What funding are we giving them? Or gave them? And to who? The Wuhan CDC lab inside the city or the Level 4 lab or the main office whatever they call it?
According to France, who built (co-built) the level 4 lab 20 miles outside of Wuhan, it didn't open until 2018, although it was completed in late 2015. The $3.7M the USA gave in 2015 could have been for equipment. Or maybe it was just for the Institute in general. Or maybe it was a bribe to keep the freezers running on the 1500 viruses the CCP had managed to accumulate.
