“School/College is filled with BS, feel good assemblies, other indoctrinating subject matter. This is shown by the length of the day and workload remote vs the time they were going to school..”
This is what people don’t realize. You can teach your children more in two hours at home than they learn in an eight hour day at school. That leaves time for them to pursue their interests. One of our daughters loved art and after she was done with schooling, she did art projects. Today she designs and sells beautiful cakes. Our other daughter loved psychology from a very early age. By 12 years old she was reading college level textbooks in her free time. After formally schooling only two hours a day, she went on to graduate from a private christian college Summa cum laude in only 3.5 years. My kids are homeschooling their own kids, and the thought of turning your children over to others for eight hours a day is appalling to them.
PM was perfectly cast.
Another hit piece against home schooling from the Associalistic Press. Nothing new here.
LoL
I think my kids teachers are doing their best, but having to check/do work/class meetings across three or four different apps is a little crazy. It would be really nice if it had all been more unified. That said our teachers only had a week or two head start to get “distance-learning” set up.
I read this and think "What the hell are we doing trying to teach kindergarteners math?"
She loves it. No bullshite from the kids.
I asked how the parents liked it.
The parents of good kids love it. The parents of bad kids want to send them back to K-12 daycare.
The teachers didn’t always like it.
His earth science teacher almost had a stroke with my son refuting him on global warming.
Some people are not cut out to be teachers, but most parents should be able to teach basic grade school level math and English. For other stuff like history & civics, Etc., just assign the kids a book or two to read & then quiz them on it.
Just one question, Ape Pee. Didn’t these parents attend public schools themselves? Why is it so hard to for them to pass along what they learned?
Unless they didn’t learn anything worth passing along in the first place.
Bingo! Most highschool graduates, graduate with a 4th grade level education.....in urban areas its probably lower. The real problem is that its getting in the way of biinge watching and texting.
“...basic kindergarten math is too hard for you or your child”
With math, little or nothing is mastered. Completely new concepts are introduced every three weeks or so, regardless if the last concept is mastered and often, the new concept has nothing to do with what has just been taught.
Given two examples, public schools and home schools, which do you think generates more illiterate students that are unable to do basic math? Which of the two do you think has more students get pregnant while still in school? Which of the two has more students that end up married and having children rather than a spate of single parents?
I loved the A&E Nero Wolfe as well.
Kramer was also a favorite on there.
Sometimes I catch the OTR Wolfe’s. Not bad.
“Didn’t these parents attend public schools themselves? Why is it so hard to for them to pass along what they learned?”
We like to watch Murdoch Mysteries, which is set in the late Victorian era. We recently saw an episode where one of the characters told his granddaughter he would “hear her multiplication tables after dinner.” I wonder how often that happens today.
I'm guardian to my young grandchildren. I can assure you there is no resemblance between the current public school curriculum and what - and how - you and I learned in school.
The tons of absurd busy work provided by the school isn't cutting it. Keep in mind this is NOT a homeschooling program, it's a patchwork thrown together.
I'm making sure mine are engaged, occupied, and safe right now. They HAVE to read. They're reading the Rush Revere series so they can absorb some American history in a fun way, and they live for the daily walk so they can get physical exercise. Yesterday they got to play dodgeball in my front yard while I gardened and that was a big thrill. They love art projects and helping me prepare meals, which is also a good way to do some math.
They "attend" their weekly Zoom meetings so they can stay connected with their teacher and classmates, but honestly, this whole "distance learning" thing is lame for little ones. Six more weeks of this. If this program is on the agenda for the fall, God forbid, I will have to look into actual homeschooling.
My mother drilled us while she ironed or washed dishes, and I drilled my kids while we were driving in the car. Rote memorization of math facts is NOT taught in our public schools, but parents are expected to work on it at home with their kids.
Oh, I love it. Not all believe the hype.
Most of this is NOT homeschooling. It is not even well thought out distance learning. It is a lot of stop gap teaching with teachers trying to put classes together on the fly. Do not let the BS media belittle dedicated homeschooling or dedicated distance learning with what is happening at homes now.
