“I just can’t do this.” Harried parents forgo home school
Associated Press ^ | April 21, 2020 | Gillian Flaccus and Jocelyn Gecker

Frustration is mounting as more families across the U.S. enter their second or even third week of distance learning — and some overwhelmed parents say it will be their last.

Amid the barrage of learning apps, video meet-ups and e-mailed assignments that pass as pandemic home school, some frustrated and exhausted parents are choosing to disconnect entirely for the rest of the academic year. Others are cramming all their children’s school work into the weekend or taking days off work to help their kids with a week’s worth of assignments in one day.

“We tried to make it work the first week. We put together a schedule, and what we found is that forcing a child who is that young into a fake teaching situation is really, really hard,” said Alexandra Nicholson, whose son is in kindergarten in a town outside Boston. “I’d rather have him watch classic Godzilla movies and play in the yard and pretend to be a Jedi rather than figure out basic math.” […]

Parents across the U.S. are concerned their kids are falling behind, especially in lower income families. In households where the parents earn less than $50,000 total annually, 72% are at least somewhat concerned about their child falling behind academically, compared with 56% of parents in high-income households, according to a late-March poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. …

Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. etc.

See?

You can’t do it yourself, you must have the state raise your children........

The Left HATES homeschooling and wants it to fail. But homeschooling is a great alternative, MUCH better than government schools and homeschooled kids usually excel - something the Left doesn’t want.

How I loathe and despise the Left.

“AP” = All Propaganda.

Yep. My first thought was “propaganda.” Can’t have those liberal indoctrination centers threatened, after all.

Wow. She tried for a whole week. Such tenacity.

My daughter home-schools. Several of her friends have realized, with their kids being home, how poorly educated they actually are.....there are at least 3 new home-school families because of this in her small area. These are families paying $15,000.00 a year for private Christian school! These younger teachers have been brainwashed into the child-centered, whole language, self esteem nonsense.

Uhhhhh....yyyeahhh.

Just one question, Ape Pee. Didn't these parents attend public schools themselves? Why is it so hard to for them to pass along what they learned?

Unless they didn't learn anything worth passing along in the first place.

I read this and think “Your child does not respect you, basic kindergarten math is too hard for you or your child” — is that too cynical?

I am assuming that these parents have it in their minds that they “can’t do it” and they do not have the discipline to devote the time and commitment into homeschooling.

It can be done but I have to wonder if these parents who say they can’t do it are the snowflakes who believe it takes a village and mom and dad are not part of the teaching process as they want someone else to do it.

I agree, but not so with everyone - homeschooling is sometimes NoSchooling - kids grow up illiterate and unable to do basic math. And if they are boys, they cannot even get pregnant like mom did as a lifestyle choice.

Even in a private Christian school, the teachers are like this?

If not working soon, I will be home schooling my two grade school-aged kids. Difficult due to the 14 hour time difference via Skype or FB messenger, but doable.

The first such propaganda stories occurred when they ran a story where after literally two days, the people in the article were whining they had to get out of the house because they were stir-crazy.

A lot of these parents are probably having to work from home.

So trying to mix work at home with home schooling isn’t going to work out very well.

Image a family of 3 or 4 living in a 1000 square foot apartment every everyone is online trying to work/school.

Not the ideal setup.

These people don’t know how to teach their own children. Pretty pathetic. Just read to them. Have them balance your checkbook. Have them color pictures. Teach them about life. Go to you tube and get free piano lessons. Have them watch history videos. Read the Bible.

Bingo, just as they have been programmed to think.

My son did go to public school, but his education was my responsibility.
His teachers (particularly history) remarked that he already knew much of the material.
He learned to think for himself and is not like many of his age cohorts.

This is where the public schools have failed, dreadfully deficient at treating parents as partners.

Notice that the non-family situations get exacerbated the closer the people live to a large city. Boston’s mentioned early in the article.
