Virus forces cancellation of iconic events like Oktoberfest

Spain called off the Running of the Bulls in July, the U.S. scrapped the national spelling bee in June and Germany canceled Oktoberfest five months away, making it clear Tuesday that the effort to beat back the coronavirus and return to normal could be a long and dispiriting process.

Amid growing impatience over the shutdowns that have thrown tens of millions out of work, European countries continued to reopen in stages, while in the U.S., one state after another — mostly ones led by Republican governors — outlined plans to gradually get back to business.

All indications are that some businesses won’t necessarily spring back to life once they get the all-clear. […]

Germany called off the centuries-old Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich, which draws about six million visitors each year. It was previously canceled during the two world wars, during a period of hyperinflation in Germany in 1923, and because of cholera outbreaks in the 1800s.

“We agreed that the risk is simply too high,” Bavarian governor Markus Söder said. …

Aren’t there any actual men left in Germany? If so, they need to get off their arses and restore their society ... quickly.

Hysteria causes cancellation...

The scare today has unjustly put more people out of work that McCartney’s supposedly unfounded scare.

You have to admit that would be a primo target for the flu that came from China with people all packed together.

Did I mention the flu came from China?

This event is still five months off, yet they are canceling.

I think deBlasio in NYC has canceled the Gay Pride thing in June? As well as some other June events?

The point being, we are seeing events which are scheduled months into the future being canceled.

Do the powers that be expect these lockdowns to still be in effect months from now?

No there aren’t. Germany has been infected with political correctness, along with other parts of the world.

Will it cause a cancellation of the Haj as well?

Thank goodness I went to Oktoberfest in 2010. Sounds like once it’s cancelled they will never have them again: Muslims hated the event anyway. By the way, they are a lot of fun. I am sad by all this hair on fire nonsense.

According to an article I read, the Hajj has been cancelled in the past, for various reasons. Will Saudi Arabia do it because of COVID-19? I would hope so.

I think the problem is the planning that goes into these events; steps are taken (and money laid out) well in advance of the actual event. If there is any reasonable chance that the event might be cancelled (keep in mind that people come from all corners of the world to this event), then they will cancel simply to prevent more difficulties.

You may or may not remember that the NYC Marathon (another well-known annual event that draws its participants from around the world) was impacted by Superstorm Sandy, which had severely damaged no small amount of property in the NYC area, some of which was along the marathon route. (Then) Mayor Bloomberg came under a considerable amount of criticism when he cancelled the event. But he wasn't criticized for actually cancelling the event (most, if not all, of the participants believed it was the proper thing to do); he was criticized for cancelling the event just two days before the scheduled date, AFTER people had flown in from around the planet and checked into the hotels.

The complaints among the runners was the same: "We knew about the storm and we checked to ensure that the event was still on before we left home and boarded our flight; could he not have cancelled this even a day or two ago?"
