Southern States Push to Reopen With Economic Pressure Rising (Reports).
The GOP governors of three southern states have decided to ease coronavirus restrictions, permitting businesses to open.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced that by Friday of this week, residents will be able to return to some semblance of daily life and will be able to go to the gym, get haircuts, pedicures, massages, and tattoos, the New York Times reports. By next week Monday, restaurants will be open for dining, and Georgians will also be allowed to go to the movies. Bars and night clubs will remain closed for the time being.
I dont give a damn about politics now, Kemp said, according to the Los Angeles Times, insisting he was worried about his residents going broke worried about whether they can feed their children and make the mortgage payment.
Meanwhile, in Tenessee, Gov. Bill Lee said that he had no intention of extending his stay at home order, which will run out on April 30. By May 1, his office noted the vast majority of businesses in 89 counties will be allowed to open their doors.
And then theres South Carolina, where Gov. Henry McMaster announced that department stores and a few other retail businesses will be allowed to reopen Tuesday (thats TODAY), although social distancing guidelines should still be followed. Beaches will also be open to the public on Tuesday, the New York Times notes.
But the Southern states arent the only ones challenging the novel coronavirus which is still sweeping its way through the United States, where lack of testing is still an issue and there is still no real sign of decline in infections.
As the Los Angeles Times notes, none of those three states have maintained the 14 days of sustained decline in infections that guidelines from the White House have recommended be observed before lifting restrictions.
And those states arent the only ones stubbornly attempting to reopen in an attempted effort to ease the pressure on the economy.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, also a Republican, has also signaled plans to move the state back to some sense of normalcy. Starting on May 1, businesses will slowly start to be reopened while maintaining strict health guidelines.
Were going to do what we think is right what I think is right and that is try to open this economy, Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press, but do it very, very carefully so we dont get a lot of people killed. But we have to come back and thats what were aiming to do May 1.
In the meantime, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned against returning to everyday life and activities too soon
Its going to backfire, Fauci said in an interview on Good Morning America. Thats the problem.
All of the states had better open up very quickly or all hell is going to break loose. That’s not a guess.
Dr. Fauci was wrong about the severity of the disease. I see no reason to trust his assertion that reopening now is too dangerous. Dr. Fauci has consistently been wrong. It’s past time to end this panic.
Just in time for this, looks like we’re going to have most COVID-19 deaths in a single day by the end of today. It will be close if it doesn’t. Already the 4th worst day.
Dr. Anthony Fauxi, the omniscient one warning us that we are all going to die, again.
I agree . . . and blow up right in Dr Fauci's face.
If the number of diseased and dying explodes from premature openings, expect to see Trump and the governors having at the blame game, pointing at each other.
I thought we were supposed to have peaked already. What is going on?
“I thought we were supposed to have peaked already. What is going on?”
My guess? Numbers are being manipulated, as they are in NYC (anyone dying is listed as Covid, for example)
We still have zero deaths in our county from the virus. This is true of a majority of the counties within an hour of here. The coming economic fallout will end up killing more people (outside of NYC) than the virus.
Every pneumonia death since January is being reclassified as a Corona related death. Since testing will be ramping up, expect number of cases to rise as well. Also, dont expect to hear anyone on the Panic Porn stations to point this out.
Are you not paying attention?? The CDC is PADDING the numbers. EVERY freakin death, whether by car accident or cancer, will be counted as a covid death. Mark my words. THAT is not by accident. It is to hurt and blame Trump AND the open the states protestors. Again, it is a political joust by ahole dems, not because they care about Americans. The more RECORDED deaths, the more they get to blame someone else.
Personally, I wish they would care less for me and leave me the heck alone. This whole episode is BS and will backfire on Dems huge.
If the numbers explode, you’re saying Trump and the Guvs will say it’s only padding, not real cases and deaths?
Besides, where i live we have plenty of hospital beds and icu beds. And fear of hospitals being overwhelmed is the ONLY reason we closed the country. That problem, POTUS solved with the additional beds being added on boats and convention centers; not to mention all the supplies and equipment Trump has sent the states. Apparently the states do not know how to order supplies. Weird that some governors are so dumb
Now we can deal with the herd immunity.
FAUCI IS TRASH.
Enough is enough, we were told to give this until the end of April, which we did. This was never about stopping every death, but avoiding our health care system being overwhelmed.
Still way lower then the modal projections. The States have peaked and it is time for the recovery to begin.
