The team at Johns Hopkins University, where the test was developed, say a commercial product is years away and they are working to fine tune their test -- many cancers were not found by the blood test alone. But their results are the first to demonstrate that it's possible to screen people for several types of cancer at once with a blood test.
They tested about 10,000 women with no symptoms. Those who had a positive test then were given combination PET and CT scans to look for tumors.
Out of the 10,000 women, the test turned up 26 cancers that were later confirmed with PET/CT, the team reported Tuesday in the journal Science.
They included cancer types that are not usually caught before they have already spread, because they cause such subtle symptoms in the early stages.
Their findings are the first to show the test, called a liquid biopsy, can detect cancer before people even suspected they might have it.

26 in 10,000? sounds like pretty crappo test.
26 in 10,000? sounds like pretty crappo test.
10,000 people with no symptoms.
Thats 26 people that would not even suspect that they had any disease let alone cancer.
Thats possibly 26 people whose lives will be significantly longer.
The problem I see with a test like this is that it is a test that will probably rarely be administered because it probably wont be approved by insurance companies.
26 in 10,000 is not considered a good return on investment for insurance companies.
Also approving a test for someone who is apparently healthy is not usually approved. Unless the test is very inexpensive I dont see it in common use.
The test is finding extremely early cancer in people with zero symptoms. Sounds like it could save lives and huge amounts of money versus waiting for treatment until cancers are obvious.
Iv’e had blood tests out the wazoo and all they result in is more blood tests, this for 5 years, no answers.
one answer, microsystosis.
cause? cure? even the cancer clinic has no answer, they found an M spike, what’s that mean? they dont know so
I dont know.
My best guess as a yard is my bones aint making good red blood cells.
best guess is my bones
best guess is my bones
dunno how I became a yard LOL
A side-by-side (collateral) test with cancer-sniffing dogs might have produced even bettercost-effective results.
I read this as: Of 10,000 women, 26 CANCERS were identified by this blood test. My question would be: how many women in this study were shown to have one of these 26 cancers? Just my thoughts.
Depends on the cost. There are are companies making a business of ‘pay your own way’ preventative scans. So the tests will be available to the 1%, and possibly the 10%. And if the democrats get power, likely the bottom 20 or 30% as well.
But you are right about the middle class.
The test was far from perfect. Another 70 women in the trial were diagnosed with cancer that was not found by the blood test. As part of the trial, the volunteers also got standard cancer screening: mammograms and colonoscopies.
“Twenty-four additional cancers were detected by standard-of-care screening and 46 by neither approach,” the researchers wrote. The 46 other cancers became apparent through symptoms.
I guess the blood test only caught those 26. Yup, will be some years before it’s ready. Of course we’ve had promising cancer news before and it’s always going to be some years down the road but never happens
I thought there was already one.
My mom sent me a link but i forget the name..
Unfortunately, probably to late for me. Hopefully, my granddaughter can benefit from this.
I read it that they found 26 DIFFERENT kinds of Cancers in the 10K people.
If you happen to be one of the 26 and end up alive down the road, it may be a very big thing....think of the tale about the boy tossing a few starfish back into the water....
