Six members of the boards overseeing James City County, Williamsburg and York County are urging Gov. Ralph Northam to reopen the economy sooner rather than later.
The six - three from James City, two from Williamsburg and one from York - pressed for a “phased reopening of businesses as soon as possible," contending in an April 24 letter to the governor that not doing so could cause some businesses to be forever lost.
“We are very concerned that (the current expiration date of the governor’s shutdown orders) may put some of these closed businesses in jeopardy of never reopening,” they wrote.
But the letter was not signed by a majority of the total members of the three governing bodies, and the debate each board had about the letter mirrors the ones taking place nationwide about when and how to ease pandemic restrictions.
The region hosts Busch Gardens and Water Country, historic sites at Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg, and lots of restaurant, hotel and recreation options.
The joint letter encourages Northam and his staff “to work with our tourism entities as they work towards a safe reopening," suggesting that “our restaurant industry, which is being drastically affected, could reopen with strict guidelines.”

May? MAY? 30 million out of jobs! 10's of thousands of Mom/Pop small businesses already closed! This is a disaster that America will take years to recover to just a few months back. Without the hysterics of State politicians and the media, this could have been handled so much better. Plus, you have Fauci & company on TV with their doom predictions that change every couple weeks.

Herr Northam is enjoying his dictatorship, he won’t willingly give it up.
Maybe the governor needs to be reminded of Yorktown..

Could it be that the governor wants some businesses to be forever lost? It is in the interest of the Democrats to wreck the economy, to hurt Trump.

It is not just Northam. It is his Lieutenant, Attorney General and a Democrat legislature. We need a way to turn the whole bunch of them away from destroying the state. A miracle is in order.
