Requesting FReeper feedback. Thank you.
I have a laptop and desktop that have Intel Optane chip in them. The 16GB variety. The Desktop moves super fast because the Optane is enhancing a 7200RPM hard drive with a 64GB cache. Desktop boots up in 10 seconds.
The laptop is a bit slower because the hard drive it works with is the 5400RPM variety. 128GB cache iirc. But still fast boot times and fast responses.
I have run crystal disk mark for both and the desktop moves faster, has higher crystal disk mark numbers. Maybe 20% higher than the laptop.
So with conventional 2.5” SSDs that have been around for a while, plus the newer NVME and SSD drives that go into an M.2 slot, PLUS Optane chips. You have Windows 10 moving faster than ever and Linux has no speed advantage.
Get Virtual Box, from Oracle. Its free. Runs Windows, Mac, DOS, Netware, OS/2, and other flavors of Linux.
You can run whichever OS in a window on your native OS (Mac in my case) you can make it run full screen.
If you need to devote all system resources to whatever OS for some reason then youll have to partition your HD and dual boot into the native OS.
I use it.

I boot my desktop at most every hundred days. The boot process could take 10 minutes (it doesn't) and I wouldn't give a damn. Of course, I run Linux. It simply doesn't require periodic reboots. I pretty much only restart on installation of a new kernel, and that is just my own paranoia. With a properly designed system, the time it takes to reboot is immaterial. I've noticed that it is mostly windows users who talk about reboot times.
I know people that like to shut their computer off when they are done. Not just put it into sleep mode.
depends on what you use your computer for.
Does grandma need Linux to download recipes and email photos of her grandchildren? Probably not.
Does a developer want added security and technical superiority? Then yes, Linux is better.
So I would no need additional security software if I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon?
I *do* use AdBlock and NoScript on my browser, but nothing like Norton, McAfee, etc.
I've been doing this for 20 years. No issues at all. Not one single event or concern on my computers.
Thanks for the info! I am going to have to give it a try. Will probably load it on a USB drive as suggested by someone. Also, it looks like my fav browser, Brave, will work on Linux Mint.
Shadow Ace is 100% correct. I, too, have never used a antivirus app on any Linux distribution. I do enable my firewall. Can’t hurt.
Just wait until you start distrohopping, Then you know you are hooked.
