Libre Office is free and will run Microsoft Excel and Word. I don’t know about the macros, but Libre Office is great.

I use LO and nothing else. It is amazing software for being free, Never had a compatibility issue with existing MS Office files.

I use Libre Office’s API to convert programmatically Excel Spreadsheets to a PDF.
