The coronavirus pandemic has altered the horse racing schedule in a big way. The Kentucky Derby has been postponed until Sept. 5, but horse racing does return for live action this weekend in the form of the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
The Arkansas Derby is usually a prep race for the Kentucky Derby, but was moved to the first Saturday in May after the Run for the Roses was moved to Saturday, Sept. 5 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The race offers 170 total Kentucky Derby qualifying points for each division. The winner receives 100 points, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers get 40, 20, and 10 points respectively in the run towards the Kentucky Derby.
In addition, the race was split into two divisions of 11 horses apiece because there were 22 entrants. Charlatan (1-1 odds) is considered the favorite right now in Division 1 and was trained by the legendary Bob Baffert. Baffert-trained horses have won the Arkansas Derby in five of the last eight years. Gouverneur Morris could be in contention to finish near the top of the Arkansas Derby.

I thought some of the horses dropped out earlier in the week.
I believe four horses are out. Two fields of nine each.
Love racing! I haven’t seen a live one since a friend’s family took me to Aqueduct about a million years ago. They weren’t big gamblers, they just liked the races.
How about the guy who bet .50 cents on a Pick 6 and won $500,000.
Horay! Secretariat just won the all time Kentuckt Derby.
That can happen...wouldn’t happen to me, though, because I’ve never won anything but a horrible statuette at a raffle that I bid on only because I wanted to give them a little contribution. And the “donor” was there so I couldn’t immediately ditch it.
But it’s true that a tiny bid can turn out very well, and the family that I was with marched up to the window and put down a couple of dollars, as they always did. We didn’t win anything but it was fun and it gave you a horse to root for.

Yes, it can.
I was up a big amount early in the day and then I got a call that my Mom had a stroke. She was suffering from ALS and I was her primary caretaker at the time. I never moved so fast in my life.
She ended up passing away two weeks later because it was her time. She fought it for 5 and a half years.
I just know that she was rewarding me. I had just spent the previous 4 hours with her in the hospital and it was time for her nap.
There is a time for everything.
METHOD Muddle 3 mint sprigs, cube sugar, oz water;
fill to the brim with crushed ice, then 2 oz bourbon, stir.
Serve in iced silver glass with straw, conf-dusted mint sprigs.
Brilliant move to delay the race to the day that is traditionally the date of the Kentucky Derby.
How many can they fit in the gate at a time? At Churchill, they can get up to 20.
As well he should have. Seattle Slew gave him a run for his money, though.
I won on the very first horse I ever bet on, a 17-1 shot.

How can we watch the race(s)?
You can watch the race on TVG and NBC sports channel. TVG is available on most cable and satellite providers. It is also on Klowd TV . FYI.
Charlatan just won the first race. Try FS1 or NBCSN for the next one.
I wonder if Bob Baffert will get the double? He trained division 1 winner Charlatan. And has the favorite Nadal in division 2.
