Entire Long Island town put on diet as officials explain how obese people face greater risk from COVID-19

Fat chance it happens.

Officials in Huntington on Long Island told the entire town to start a diet Wednesday, Newsday reported.

“I’ve brought together a few friends to help put Huntington on a diet,” Dr. David Buchin, Director of Bariatric Surgery at Huntington Hospital, said at a press conference.

Buchin and other officials plan to provide free online exercise and yoga classes and post nutritional advice on the town’s website.

Buchin also said he’ll host multiple Facebook Live events to explain how obese people face greater risk from COVID-19.

He cited a study from Northwell Health, the largest health care provider in the state, that said 42% of hospital patients are obese.

Several other studies nationwide have suggested a link between obesity and greater mortality risk from COVID-19. Overseas, Britain is reportedly working on a plan that would label obese Brits as “at-risk” citizens alongside the elderly.

Many people have joked about the so-called “Quarantine 15,” or potential weight gain because of coronavirus lockdowns.

“We have to not let this take control over us,” Dr. William Spencer, chair of the Suffolk County Health Committee, said at the press conference. “We’re bringing attention to this issue because the quality of our health is more important than ever.”

There could be some “not so good” consequences from this . . .as in overweight pre-teens/teens and those who are self-conscience about their weight with little support. We are going bonkers over this pandemic. Maybe we should be “following the money”.

LET PEOPLE GO OUTSIDE TO GET VITAMIN D...

Obesity Linked to Lower Vitamin D Levels. She says it makes sense that obesity is associated with lower vitamin D levels since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. The study appears in the latest issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

Put a fat surtax on food, fuel, electricity, water and sewage. If states can get away with martial law, that should be easy.

There’s a couple hundred thousand people in this “town” if they mean the “Town of Huntington,” as opposed to calling the hamlet of Huntington a “town.”

overweight pre-teens/teens should feel self-conscious about their weight. shame is a very useful tool properly applied. it’s when people at a healthy weight feel shame that it turns into dysmorphia.

Many overweight pre-teen/teens come from homes that definitely are not “health conscience”. It is sad. My observations come from being in the schools.

Hmmm. It's as if skinny malnourished Chicoms custom designed this cootie for the U.S. mainland and the millions of couch dwellers.

If you went to any store in the last few months you would see all the sugared cereals gone, while all the Cherrios, Shredded Wheat and Corn Flake were plentiful...

Same with Yogurt, Plueger or Kerrygold butters, hard boiled eggs and cottage cheese.

Frozen foods? Only thing left were frozen vegetables in their natural state.

Fresh vegetables? Always looked like they had just been placed on shelves.

Some people eat garbage thinking it’s food but, it’s really poison.

You are right. I’ve seen mothers (dads, too) shopping with a cartload full and veggies were not among the goods. . . .but I’m not throwing stones. . . I bought 5 Pepperidge Farm cakes (assorted flavors) in the frozen food section to put in the freezer. They were on sale for $2.99. It indicates on the package it serves 8 . . .I don’t think so (smile).

Not enough time, it takes years to lose weight safely and you need your nutrients to fend off disease.
No crash diets.
Eat healthy, go outside and move around in the sun every day instead.

They should never have closed the parks,

People have no clue. Weight loss can occur safely over a 1-2 year period, sometimes 3, but that isn’t the issue. The issue is keeping it off forever after. And for that, you are right, it takes years of undoing the built up habits, manners and the type of food and drink that you consume. It ain’t easy and most simply fail again and again each time gaining more weight back.

Less than 20 % of highly committed, dues paying members of Weight Watchers meet their lifetime goal and that is with a full schooling of behavior modification. Of those only 20 % keep their weight off for 5 years or more. That means less than 4% are truly successful.

You have to change your relationship with food and give up the poison everyone now consumes (and is the underpinning of modern farming and marketing). Bariatric surgeons know they are the only thing that works (somewhat or temporarily) with the poison food meth-like addicted fat Americans.

You can blame farmers, you can blame Agro-culture giants, you can blame chemical and genetic modification companies, you can blame government, you can blame marketers, you can blame parents who don’t know chit about food and cooking, you can blame human weakness in one of the most essential desires, and you would all be correct. Obesity is a planned outcome. You are considered consumer livestock where the goal is to fatten you up by having you purchase as much crap as possible and to use the medical system to keep you alive as long as possible so you can buy more crap and keep getting fatter. The Wuhoo screws with the model.
