COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is going to allow all restaurants in the state to reopen for in-store dining on Monday, although there will be some strong restrictions.

McMaster made the announcement Friday afternoon during a news briefing. He said he would address "close contact" businesses such as barbershops, salons, and gyms on Monday.

“As we gradually and methodically lift restrictions aimed at combating the coronavirus, it is incumbent upon South Carolinians to follow to the guidance and recommendations provided by our public health experts to keep themselves and their loved ones safe,” said Gov. Henry McMaster. “This virus still presents a serious threat to South Carolinians, but I have faith in the people of our state and their ability to act responsibly and in the best interest of the communities they live in.”

However, McMaster said this does not mean every restaurant has to open. He said each business can decide if they feel comfortable opening then based on what they're experiencing.

Based on advice and recommendations from the “Response” component of accelerateSC, which includes input from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and the South Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association (SCRLA), Governor McMaster has established guidelines for restaurants to follow if and when they choose to open for dine-in services. Those guidelines include, but are not limited to, the following:

Finally. Although I’m kind of sad that this is a day late for Mother’s Day. All I want to do is sit at a bar, have a drink, converse with people who don’t share my last name, and not have to do dishes afterwards.

Me too! However, here's what the SC regs say about that: "We recommend to remove bar stools or maintain a 6’ distance between each party to allow people to order drinks at the bar and sit using appropriate social distancing."

So opening the restaurants is not opening the restaurants. I’ll bet the glasses have to be cleaned with Lysol. Bad after taste

We in SC have been open for outdoor dining already, however some owners tried it and shut back down because people were pushing tables together and waiting in the queue without regard to social distancing. One owner said he closed because he believed it wasn’t safe for the employees.

I expect the same will be true for indoor dining.

We have had choice in SC, to conform to the establishment rules or not, based on the States recommendations, to wear a mask or not, the choice is ours along with the consequences.

The only hard and fast rule for small business that I know of that has created a really hard hit is the closure of ‘close contact’ businesses i.e., barber shops, hair and massage salons.

Personally during the shutdown we have been allowed to hire services (house/yard), grocery shop, shop at Lowes and Ace Hardware, pick up fast food, take a pet to the veterinarian, gather with neighbors on our rural road, sell a truck and drive wherever we wanted to. All done with each party taking common sense precautions of social distancing, limited contact and mask wearing as the situation called for. I already work from home so no change needed for work.

We are blessed in SC compared with Democrat run States.

Because many are fleeing across the Georgia border where things have been mostly open for a week or so now. Same with Alabamians coming over our western border.

It means most restaurants will not be financially able to hire back all the staff they had when they were closed down.

All they need are the health-safety guidelines for customers and workers, but the limits on how many customers are unnecessary if customers and staff continue to wear masks - for now.

” ... many are fleeing across the Georgia border where things have been mostly open for a week or so now.”

There are very few restaurants open for dine-in, at least where I am in Georgia, because of the many state-mandated rules (39 of them) that must be followed. A few big-chain franchises have announced that they will open next week, but the local and family-run places will continue to do curbside pick-up only for the indefinite future.

We ate in Applebees east of Atlanta Friday night, different from anything we are used to but we got out of the house.
