It was my understanding at the time that the Navy leased that sub, or a similar one, from Sweden, for testing.

It was that one, HMS Gotland, a diesel-electric sub with air independent propulsion (AIP). The AIP is a Stirling machine using liquid oxygen.

She was stationed with a Swedish crew in San Diego during a couple of years, helping the USN to train anti-submarine warfare.
