Perhaps they’re not issued ammo.
The instinct to not kill other humans is strong in most people. In the opening days of WWI there were incidents of where small numbers of German and British troops collided unexpectedly, laid down their rifles, and pelted each other with rocks.
It’s worth the time yo watch.
It shows the big picture and what China is doing to build military bases at ports that can handle their big ships at strategic locations around the world.
Is this story from 10,000 years ago? Pretty soon they’ll discover sharp sticks.

Then the big 'soccer' game during the 'Christmas Truce' in WWI.... Not sure if the game was actual but the 'cease fire' amongst the troops on the front line was.
Reminds me of the German and GI were in a field hospital, pretty much banged up and when one woke they asked him what happened and he said they 'sort of' bumped into each other in the middle of the road. The German said 'Roosevelt is an SOB', the American said 'Hitler is an ass' and while standing in the middle of the road agreeing with each other and shaking hands, a truck hit them.

There are videos on youtube documenting life in the Indian high elevation military camps. The troops are rotated frequently due to health issues from the altitude and continuous severe cold.
Fist fighting the Chicoms was probably a great stress reliever from the sheer boredom of the place.
