Locals sue San Francisco after homeless camps make life ‘insufferable’

A San Francisco law school, business owners and local residents are suing the city to force it to clean up the Tenderloin neighborhood — alleging an almost 300 percent spike in homeless shanty towns, drug dealing and feces-covered sidewalks have made conditions “insufferable.”

The lawsuit, filed in federal court May 4 by a group of plaintiffs led by the University of California Hastings College of the Law, seeks a court order to stop the city from using the neighborhood as a “containment zone” for homeless encampments.

“Open-air drug sales and other criminal activity, plus crowds of drug users and sidewalk-blocking tents, pervade and threaten the health and lives of all of the Tenderloin’s residents,” the lawsuit reads. “What has long been suffered in the Tenderloin has become insufferable.”

The number of tents and makeshift homeless shelters in the 50-block section that more than 20,000 permanent residents call home has more than doubled from 158 in early March to 391 as of May 1, according to a survey cited in the lawsuit.

A city-issued report, meanwhile, found a 285 percent spike in the number of tents and structures in the neighborhood from January through Wednesday.

Ask the city if these drug pushers have a permit.

But complying with the law is costly in two important ways. First, the actual fees can be exorbitant. In San Francisco, for example, the filing fee for a “peddler’s permit” costs $330-$525 depending on whether you are selling non-food or food items. Then, if you get the city’s blessing, you have to pay an additional $166-$624 annually for a license to serve the community. It’s safe to say that most kids and their parents probably could not afford that expense.

If the virus was real, the homeless would be dropping like flies.

Coyotes walk into San Francisco in large numbers attracted by the odor of feces. The predators sense there is a big herd of debilitated sick mammals available and vulnerable.

When I use to live in Los Angeles, they had the same problem in Santa Monica, CA. So what the city board did was make the people serving meals to the homeless abide by the same laws that restaurants have to. End of problem. The homeless had to go somewhere else for their three squares a day.

Homeless are actually in great shape. They’re skinny. They probably eat better than the typical American.

Immune systems of homeless are very strong, they have high natural vitamin d reserves and have already been exposed to many viruses, dirty environment etc. That is why the believe it hasn’t hit homeless communities.

Plus, if you were a virus, would you want to make your home in the body of a homeless person?

The Tenderloin is “insufferable”? Well, who knew?

Sheesh, I knew to stay away from the Tenderloin when I moved to SF in 1973 nearly 50 years ago.
