Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey made a surprise appearance on Fox News's Bret Baier's show Tuesday night to try and bring some common sense back to society. He regretted to see that we Americans started off on the same page, intent on defeating the coronavirus, but once again we let politics overwhelm us.
"About a month ago I could feel that this united purpose that we all have as Americans to beat this enemy and this virus, that purpose got hijacked a bit by partisan politics," McConaughey explained. "All of a sudden the narrative became, 'If you want to go work, you're on the far right. If you don't want to go to work and you want to stay home, you're on the far left.' And now even the mask wearing is getting politicized where if you want to wear a mask you're a liberal and if you don't you're a conservative. And that's just not true."
If we try to fight both the virus and each other, "we're going to lose," he warned.
"This is a tug of war with the virus, we need all hands on the rope if we're going to beat it."
And Americans are uniquely qualified to face this crisis, the actor insisted, reminding us of how the USA came together during other crises, such as World War II.
"We had a crisis that came to us and we were united that purpose," the actor said.
He encouraged viewers to act locally until we find a long term solution. McConaughey and his wife Camila founded the Just Keep Livin Foundation to support underserved students and and during the crisis have donated meals, laptops and other resources to children in need. They've also donated 200,000 face masks to frontline workers.
As with many of McConaughey's performances, his Fox News appearance got rave reviews.
Just heard @McConaughey on @SpecialReport speaking about coronavirus response. I think he gave the most thoughtful and reasonable commentary I've heard from a celebrity maybe ever. Mark Hemingway (@Heminator) May 12, 2020
Thank you for a great interview, Bret. And thank you @McConaughey for coming on FOX News to talk about your initiative. I agree 100%, ALL Americans should be pulling the rope from the same side, together against COVID-19. Sheri Herrmann (@Sherisracin) May 12, 2020
“Thank God for celebrities...they know everything” - Homer Simpson
I really like McConaughey. He may be a liberal (I really don’t know one way or the other), but at least he doesn’t spew liberal garbage (at least that I’ve heard of). He is a really good actor, too. Some of his movies that I recommend are Gold, Lincoln Lawyer, Mudd and Interstellar.
Trotting out Matthew McConaughey to calmly call for an unachievable “unity” is the modern equivalent of having the camp orchestra play soothing music for the new arrivals at Auschwitz-Birkenau. “Stay calm, it’ll all be over soon.”
“If you don’t want to go to work and you want to stay home, you’re on the far left.”
No, if you want to jail people and label them “right wing extremists” if they don’t stay home or if they want to go back to work, then you’re a far left jackboot.
Ill pull on the rope, for awhile. But I soon have to know how long the rope is, and if theres anything in the other end...
One of his movies I recommend NOT seeing is “Killer Joe”...what a weird pizza chit that was....sheesh
I don’t get this donated face masks to frontline workers thing.
Why can’t they, especially since they all have jobs, buy their own? Tens of millions of people don’t have jobs now. Many of them still haven’t been able to collect unemployment. Why doesn’t the actor’s charity donate masks to the unemployed?
Alright, alright, alright!
He's not wrong here. My ultra conservative mom and step dad have been extremely cautious during this whole ordeal and don't step foot out of their house without their masks.
Always interested in the views of those intellectuals from La La Land.
Don’t care what he has to say.

Ouch! Thats going to leave a mark! Well said!
This vapid play-actor is showing up all over media. He was on CNN before Fox, being interviewed about the same nonsense.
So we’ve run out of “expert” liars to interview, and now we’re turning to ones who are paid to play make-believe...
He can stay home .....in his mansion.....forever ....and not worry about where his next meal is coming from.....
There are millions of folks who cant .
Oh wait, was that political Matthew?
Why is an “actor” credible? Why even ask. Ask me and you’ll get a REAL answer.
I knew right away that Comrade Mayors and Comrade Governors would be very slow to give up their dictatorial powers.
For those of us who have read what is really going on with this bug, it's perfectly natural that you're going to have different responses from different folks. If my wife were still here with us, my personal life would be extraordinarily different from what it is now, as chemo treatments had pretty much destroyed her immune system. She would probably last a couple of days if she caught something like this. As such, I would be doing everything I could to make sure I didn't bring anything into the house.
As it is though, she's already having breakfast with Jesus, and I have a healthy and robust immune system. I'm taking no precautions at all, because the likelihood that this will affect me adversely is almost nil.
Even if she were around, and threatened, I would not be demanding that everyone else be as justifiably paranoid as I would be for myself and the love of my life.
