You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

Figured out the three JBZ words, and it all fell into place.

3 min. First word is obvious; should've looked at 3rd word after the comma next (double letter at end). Also, the first word gives away three words which share letters with it.

Then get the word after the comma (only one or two possibilties, grammatically), and it falls into your hand.

I thought I might know who the author was from the 4-5 pattern, and it turned out to be a correct guess.

The author had Joel Chandler Harris as a dinner guest at his house, and the other guests were the kind of people he describes in this puzzle. They eagerly awaited Harris's arrival, but when he arrived they showed their disappointment by exclaiming of "He's white!"

Yes. About 3 and 1/2 min. First word led to rest of JBZ prefix words. URR and then 3rd word after the comma. Rest of puzzle fell into place.

Nice one. Just play with the short words until it all comes together.

I enjoy these puzzles so much and thank you very much for posting them. Could I make one request though, could you post yesterday’s solution separate from the ping post. If I miss a day or two, which I frequently do on the weekends, my search for the ones I’ve missed gives away the solutions in the pings. Thanks!

I can start doing that. I try to make it a different color that’s hard to see, but I can do that.

If someone can show me how to print UPSIDE DOWN, I can post the answers that way.

WOW....got the first word (guessed) correct, 3rd fell in and the rest was all going through the motions.

I do NOT believe WC Field would agree with the statement.

Heard of a great test.

Whisper a ‘tale’ in a childs ear with 20 of them in a circle, each one whisper to the next in line and by the time it gets back to the originator, no one knows what the original thought was.

I would prove it to you BUT the ‘idiots’ say maintain 6 feet and only 10 at a gathering.......<: <: <:

You are describing a game known as “telephone”.

The older I get the more I think I am/was dyslectic - back in the 50s school a dyslectic was more or less considered a dummy...that wasn’t my problem BUT my REMARKS column always said ‘should apply harder’(??)

I moved around a lot and for some reason we thought the girls were smarter and with always being the BNG (and smallish..5’8” 120+- in USN 1958) I may have been ‘afraid’ of showing others up?
But I was a good+ ballplayer so that kept the ‘bullies’ away.

Anyhoooo, one of my many talents is/was reading upside down which comes in handy when someone reviewing something and am sitting on the other side of the desk reading it as fast as ‘they’....

You could use white font color instead of green. In order to see the text the reader would have to select the text:
