It depends on your laptop to some extent. Even with a 10000 rpm drive, an SSD is usually faster. The older laptops would run @ 1.5 mbs writes. A new laptop today can run @ 600 mbs speeds.No mechanical drive can even keep up with 1.5 unless it's a SCSI drive. Then you have costs forbidding.

They made a big deal out of SSD limits to reads and writes when they first came out, but upon using them you quickly realize you will toss the laptop before having to change drives. Go with SSD. Most people won't keep their laptop over 3-5 years and then it's usually not run 24/7/365.

I had a 300gb 10,000 rpm SCSI on an Adaptech 160 adapter used for my C: drive on my daily use desktop. I used it all day every day. I could never get over about 130-140 mbs in disk tests. I finally got a larger SSD to see if it would go faster. It cost less money and was faster out of the box.

The SCSI was very dependable, but I just got tired of waiting for reads and writes. The SSD is visibly faster.
