Soleimani wasn’t enough of a hint?

*************

A productive hit for sure, but it was not an engagement with a brazen and provocative armed enemy trying to intimidate us. There’s a big difference.

I agree. They are trying to provoke an incident to distract their people from their severe domestic problems. Its an age old tactic.

My concern is that by failing to show a resolve to protect ourselves against constant harassment we are setting the stage for a serious miscalculation that could lead to something much worse.

They are desperate and capable of doing something crazy. If that occurs we might wish we had done something to discourage them a lot sooner.

I think it’s pretty stupid that we still push carriers into that lake. A shooting incident — even a lopsided US victory — would probably end those deployments. That would allow the IRGC to claim a strategic victory.

Somewhere, in the Navy or the NSC, it was realized that a warning stated in terms of a specific standoff distance is more effective and easier to enforce than a warning that does not state a specific distance. If the US and Iran are to trade blows, at least it will be because that is what both parties intend.
