The highways and byways of America have been eerily quiet over the past several weeks thanks to responsible citizens doing their best to remain indoors and limit unnecessary travel. Meanwhile, a small group of highly irresponsible drivers have taken these open stretches of asphalt as a sign that they should drive as fast as possible from one coast to the other. Thats right, its high time to revive the Cannonball Run Challenge, which you may remember from that cruddy Burt Reynolds comedy.
In a recent video, former Cannonball Run record holder and éminence grise Ed Bolian reported that, over the last five weeks, the longstanding 28 hour and 50 minute record had been beaten a whopping seven times, with a number of the cross country trips coming in under 26 hours.

That makes sense. Better roads and less traffic.
Too bad they didnt say what the record holding car was at the source - I was hoping they would say more.
Did they do it in an 18 wheeler?
There must be some real money behind this madness. Those Audi A8s do not come cheap. Neither does the air support.
And its just a matter of time before one of these idiots cause a wreck and injure or even kill someone.
“The Gumball Rally” was a much better movie on the same theme

But, J.J., I saved this woman’s ... dog!
That might have been from the second or third one. They run together.
Vanishing Point
An Audi A8.
Cool. (Though dangerous.)
Hmm, I wonder if there is a record for that? There is one for diesel, but I doubt it’s an 18 wheeler.
I remember one Cannonball race that was featured in Auto Week about 30 years ago. A team from the UK drove a Lotus and was stopped by the AZDPS in Williams AZ. They had a picture of the ticket they received. It was written by one of my high school classmates.
Back in the day, reading the actual accounts of the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash was a dont miss annual event.
The original version please.
Take excessive speed and drive at excessive speed.
Around 50 years ago, 2 guys from Motor Trend, or some other magazine drove from Pacific to Atlantic in 54 hours.
They claimed to have abided by speed laws.
The car was a Renault. I can’t recall the model but my Brother had one. It was a 4 cylinder but water cooled. It had incredibly nice seats for a cheap car.
As for colorful characters in Gumball...
“There must be some real money behind this madness”
No money just bragging rights.
It had Gary Busey. That’s good enough for me.
