1. What determines the point at which you will turn and run and abandon the citizens you have sworn to protect and serve?
2. Can you draft a policy which gives the citizens a clear understanding of when you will turn and run? This is vital to the community because they need as much notice as possible to arm, organize, and deploy to have a chance to overcome the threat.
3. Hypothetically, suppose a crowd of thousands of thugs approaches a community and you turn and run and abandon your citizens. The next day, thousands of bodies of thugs are stacked like cord wood. Since you chose to abandon your positions, are you now obligated not to investigate, and arrest and prosecute the citizens who defended their homes and lives when you wouldn’t?

Our system has police and National Guard (military) following political orders. Let’s not complicate things. We are losing our minds over a bad police incident in a full liberal state. I served in the military and could NEVER imagine retreating let alone indiscriminately killing. I could be ordered to retreat. Could my chain of command and culture of the military be so perverted and toxic to act out criminally with psychotic abandon? Was I ever put in a situation where I was UNARMED and/or had asinine rules of engagement? It has happened.
They'll then arrest the people who shot the thugs.

otoh, I can see withdrawing boots because the rioters wanted a confrontation. So that was removed. OTOH, they should have followed up no boots with air support - like the Forestry supertankers full of fish guts and other nasty sticky stuff that could be dumped on the rioters and put out the fires in one go. Back in the day (late 60’s)I refused to obey an illegal order (in the field), and prevailed. The US Military (at least the rank and file) is one of the most HONORABLE institutions on the face of the Earth.
My military mind says Virginia has that county, as they are under duress with their governor and liberal state house.

I'm not disagreeing with that or the possibility that they were ordered to retreat. What galls me is that we work hard to have homes and families, only to see people entrusted to protect us cut and run, or those above them ordering them to cut and run at the first sign of trouble, leaving us to deal with the howling mob. If they can't, or won't, take their responsibilities seriously then QUIT dammit, and make room for those who WILL do their duty when things get tough.
