I made no claim to “plain unvarnished truth” - though I do like objectivity, as far as it goes. This author is clearly biased (”financially invested in Tesla ... for the long term” while touting the genius of 12-year-old Elon Musk over current auto industry CEOs) and, even worse, politically agenda-driven (”supporter of the mission to transform the world to sustainable carbon free energy”). Sorry, that just triggers my barf reflex.

I think that anyone commenting here should be aware of the nature of the author, if they did not go to the source. Why would you object to that?

As for an oracle link that you requested, all I can find is oracle.com, but that probably does not help much here. The oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece must have neglected to register a website...:)

Ok.

What is the transmission loss to the charging station? The energy efficiency of the boiler that makes the electricity? The curve on power loss for the batteries?

For instance, a good boiler is in the high 80% efficient in making steam. Then there is power loss in making the turbine spin that generates electricity. Then there is transmission loss from the plant to the charging station, and then the step from line voltage to charging voltage.

That is the thing. Everyone focuses on the battery discharge efficiency (which 70% for a new battery is pretty good, but some fork trucks are a bit better), but not the transmission cost. If you want to go full energy cycle, including extraction of the lithium and battery recycling, it is even worse.

There is a place for e cars, but claiming more efficiency is not a good argument.

“What is the transmission loss to the charging station? “

3-5%.

Tesla batteries are close to 90% round-trip.

All the factor you mentioned boil down to one parameter. Cost t8 the consumer.

With the Electric you get more miles per $ spent on fuel.

Right. That’s why I keep my old plasma...in the winter I figure it’s 100% efficient ;p

“Why would you object to that?”

Not only,’no objections’, but I see the author as an honest broker of his position.
We all have biases. The problem arises when it becomes ‘settled science’.
None can pass the Turing test or Chinese room test.

“The oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece must have neglected to register a website.”

Sadly the Greeks have had some lean years and probably lost or sold their domain?

I like the interfaces I use to be logically organized and uncluttered as well. I have a radio on my Honda that drives me nuts. Every time I want to use the radio in my car when I start driving it makes me acknowledge a safety warning. Whomever designed the menu paths on that car’s main display was a sadist because nothing is logically organized.

They also have a little commuter car that looks like a bigger Smart car.

I will grant he is a broker of his position (obviously, by definition), but “honest” when there is a clear enviro-political agenda he is, ahem, driving, and he is financially invested in that position?

As honest as, say, inventor-of-the-internet and all-round good guy, Nobel laureate Al Gore? (Checks the boxes for both biases - ideology and personal profit.)

Funny you should mention “settled science” in that context. Because we all know it is not so.

But let’s get back on track to my original argument: Less complexity in automotive *user interfaces* of the electronic gizmo variety is IMO better. That is all.

No disagreement.
Therefore it must be settled science.

I disagree. Complexity is not the problem.

Well, as I think back it may have been only eight of us.   Seven of us plus our Grandmother.   Several times our sister got to take a girlfriend on trips to even out the odds for her but I don't think she did on that trip.   But yes, very close.

0.5C delta equals a 0.9F delta.

A 1F temp change feels like the right change with respect to comfort. So the 0.5C increments makes sense.

Personally, I can't tell any noticable difference unless going at least 2-3° C up or down. Guess I'm just insensitive. (Yeah, that's what she said too...)
