Chicago police officers on Sunday had once again been ordered to work 12-hour shifts and have their days off canceled amid some protesting that has persisted in parts of the city following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police nearly three weeks ago.
A Chicago police spokesman could not say why officers were forced to go back to the extended shifts, but the directive from top CPD brass comes following the shooting death Friday night of a black man by a police officer in Atlanta.
That shooting, which led to the firing of the officer and the resignation of Atlanta’s police chief, prompted more protests in that city as intense demonstrations calmed down there nearly three weeks after Floyd’s death on Memorial Day.
Until further notice, Chicago cops who are on active duty and not on vacation will have to work the 12-hour shifts - a normal shift is about 8 1/2 hours - and come in on their days off, the Chicago police spokesman, Luis Agostini, said Sunday morning.

That’s wrong. We all need our time away from the stress.
These are not robots, they are people, people who may decide they can work someplace else.
“Come in on their days off”....I thought it was illegal to make such a demand of ANY employee.
It borders on slavery.
Not to mention, Mayor Lightfoot doesn’t generally inspire much loyalty and devotion as it is. She is widely disliked right now.

What an odd turn of phrase
I guess 8 hour shifts aren’t long enough for the City to find cops doing something they don’t agree with to fire them. City officials want to give the cops 4 more hours to screw up...raise the odds of it happening.
This is not going to last.Working 12 hour shifts dealing with societies trash are going to burn these officers out quick.
As people get less down time they get irritable,forgetfulll and more prone too doing things like striking out at very minor provocations.
This is just going to Make Chicago more law suit prone.

I trust many of them quit. Buy weapons and ammo folks and more importantly, learn to properly use them.

If the police want to be appreciated again they ought to go on a week strike or blue flue in a place like Chicago.
In two or three days the powers that be will be getting on their knees begging for them to come back.

Hard to believe the contrast between Mayor Daley and the 1968 police force and the current situation. Today, the entire 1968 force would be charged and jailed.
Some what are these big cities going to do if the police forces resign En Masse and form a private security force that will do the cities policing at $100/hr/policeman?

You know, so many of the urbanites hold folks in flyover country in disdain but the city dwellers are really looking as though they aren’t bright enough to take care of themselves. They need small town help.
