Better get that overtime in writing-—Los Angeles has had cops on overtime for weeks, and now they are RETROACTIVELY refusing to PAY the overtime.

Bet the State Labor Board is going to be very busy there.

12 hour shifts with 3 days on 2 days off is a new scheduling tool that actually gives cops a bit more total time off. Not really sure how Chicago is implementing this, but it can reduce overtime costs for the municipality as well. It is a bargaining issue in many recent police contracts. Police unions are often in favor of the longer shifts because it gives officers more time with their families by giving them a larger number of days off. However, many old school police administrators feel the long shifts result in exhausted officers who may be prone to make dangerous errors in judgement.

I worked in Corrections (NY State). I retired in 2003. Our jobs were won by seniority. We worked 8 hours and 15 minutes each day. We had to be there 15 minutes before our shift started for line-up. We had swapping privileges. Many of the officers were hunters, and swapped days with other officers to hook up time off. You'd work for an officer on the day he needed off, and vice versa. It meant working 16 hours shifts for the most part. I was a Sergeant and had weekends off. I used to swap with another Sergeant who worked days, and also had weekends off. I worked afternoons by choice (no brass around). I'd work 16 hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday...his 7-3, and my 3-11 shift, then I'd come in and work my regular Wednesday 3-11 shift, and then he'd work his regular 7-3, and then mine on 3-11 on Thursday and Friday. It gave us four straight days off each week. It was a nice deal, until they eliminated his job, and he had to bid another job, and he ended up having to give up his weekends.

As an officer, there was a time we worked 6 days on, with 2 days off...then as the days rotated forward each week, one week we'd end up working a 5 day week with 1 day off, and then the following weekend we'd have off. Sure wouldn't want to have to work that schedule today.
