The Irish were no more primitive than other people of their time. Their savagery was no worse than say, the Romans. Applying our standards to ancient peoples doesn’t work. That said, the coming of Christianity did make the Irish a better people. It got rid of ritual sacrifice and slavery.

It is something that you can say to every atheist.
That even if you don’t believe in Christ—it was he who abolished human sacrifice—which was practiced by every people group on earth. We would have a very different civilization today without him.

The Irish were raiding England in the 1300's for slaves. This was long after St Patrick was was dead and gone.
