My first task in engineering, contracting, fresh out of school, was designing flocculators. Seriously. Big wooden paddles that break up clumps of "matter" in sewage treatment plants, prior to feeding into the settling and digester tanks.
It was interesting, as long as you didn't have to visit the job site... Sometimes, theory is better than reality.
