Don’t give out cash at a gas station - most stories are scams. I have put a few gallons in someones tank if they seem to really need help.
I put $10 worth of gas in a broken down van with a poor family - as I was leaving the guy was trying to pull the gas back out of a tank.

I would agree with that. But in this case the lady was evidently minding her own business, and the two men came up to her. So it seems legit.
Had this happen to me several times. I always offer to fill their tanks. No takers except one. A group of college kids (supposedly). Claimed they were on empty, but the tank only took 5 gallons. They tried to then claim their gauge was broken. I told them they needed a better sob story.
