20 years ago they were beating up kids who’s parents voted for Bush-Cheney. They were setting fire to signs on their properties and spray painting swastikas on their homes.

I have to go to DC in August to attend a memorial for my sister. I guess my traditional side trip to the National gallery is out and we’ll be cowering in place at my liberal brother in laws for the duration.

Not at all..you should be loyal to decent friends, neighbors, and coworkers. But you really should open your eyes and your mind. Many people do not live and shop in “sheltered” neighborhoods and work in well-protected sites containing solely well-behaved employees. This “one” individual is not a rarity. I have the Cold Steel blackthorn cane. It would make a good club but is a little heavy for a walking stick. I still sometimes use it tho.
Well, I’ve never encountered an individual like that in my personal goings-around. But maybe I don’t go looking for them.
I live in - and grew up in - what is now a Black majority county just outside of DC; and I have not been ‘sheltered’. I know that there are bad and misguided and ignorant people everywhere; but I have not encountered what you seem to find so prevalent.
I’m very sorry that you have apparently endured such bad experiences. Perhaps you should move, and find better neighbors and company.

I made a walking stick for my Mother using a shoot from a huckleberry bush. It is the hardest wood I ever saw but was almost impossible to find one with a straight length more than two feet.
I use it now. Very light.
