Nixon was no conservative, and what conservative instincts that he had were severely compromised by his compulsion to be liked by the press and media (which was never possible, any more than it is possible for Trump to be liked, no matter what he does).

I am still proud that my first vote for a President was for Richard M. Nixon, because the alternative was what we are facing right now, again.

You know, he showed in more than a few ways his conservative shortcomings, but he will always be high on my list simply for his actions in the LINEBACKER II campaign that bombed Hanoi and Haiphong, and laid mines in Haiphong harbor. Should have been done at least six or seven years earlier.

I always cut Nixon slack because of that.
